My point exactly. Most would rather use a phone to text and message than to have a real phone conversation with the person they're communicating with.
My daughters went down that road........... I refused to text them back, and called them back after every text............ They eventually "Learned" that old dad wasn't going to text, and might as well call him.......... had to steer them a little, but for the best....... they ALWAYS call now!.. LOL

If you have two daughters and granddaughters who live 1,000 miles away, you have Facebook.

I actually find it useful - I just found and bought a new bike on their Marketplace and sold my bike via the same. I'm surprised they don't charge you for this, like those thieves over on Ebay. So I'm sure they're figuring out how to do that right now.

I change my Log-in info pretty frequently, I guess that has been working so far. And nothing more personal than my email, which folks can pretty much get anywhere these days. Same for your SS#

Had it, got in touch with some old friends, we lost touch again, and I deleted my account about 7-8 years ago because it was so vapid and removed me from the real world, instead of forging connections as was claimed. I won't even go into the ethical issues of selling data about me, not to mention the security and social risks of living virtually.

"If the product is free, you are the product."

It would be nice to see pics of friends far away some times, but when the itch strikes, I just call them up!

I got bored one day a couple of months ago so I signed up with a fake name and email. The pipe scene had a few things that were interesting. The best part was I learned that Jack Howell was carving once again.
10 or 11 pipes later I have taken a break, but that is all it is. I got rid of 40 pipes and have maybe another dozen after that. My collection will consist of nothing but artisan made papes that all smoke as good as I expect them to. I plan on maybe another 9 or ten I want to stop at a number I can remember like 60 seems like it may work.

Some how I was inundated with requests to be friends with people I didn't even know. I mean what is this crap about having the most friends? What do I win, Morgan Fairchild perhaps?

If you are on the internet, your private information, including your social security numbers has been leaked, over and over, and over again. Bought anything from anywhere? Your private information has been hacked and sold. Been to a doctor? Your private information has been hacked and sold. Enrolled at school? Your private information has been hacked and sold. Work for a living? Your private information has been hacked and sold. Make a phone call? Your private information has been hacked and sold. Own an unshielded wallet? Your private information has been hacked and sold. Breathed? Your private information has been hacked and sold.
The only reason that the Facebook hack is even a story is that making it such serves the purpose of making the hack seem like an aberation. It isn't. Welcome to normal.

Most of us have absolutely no idea just how extensively and in such myriad ways, our lives are scrutinized, spied upon, and sold. And only a sadly delusional moron thinks he or she has beaten the snoops.

Online security measures are shit, crap, nonexistent. A "secure" site is BULLSHIT! The is no such thing as a SECURE site. Your right to privacy is a complete and utter thing of the past for every one of you, so get over it! Going off grid is close to becoming nonexistent.

Have a nice day.

I'm low tech so was never drawn into social media other than Forums. I saw a few My Space pages in the old days, though I was not a member, and it all looked egocentric and childish, like a middle school party. It was okay for those young folks, but nothing to be involved with. LinkedIn seemed kind of creepy, always soliciting your participation in a way that made you not want to participate. Then Facebook drew in various of my friends and I pretty much never heard from them again through any other medium, drawing a kind of vampire picture of the activity. It can draw a lot of attention, but none I'd want. It is supposed to make it easy to have a lot of friends -- using friend as a verb all the time -- but not in a good way. Even corrupting the meaning of the word friend is a bad beginning. Let me say, Mark Zuckerberg is not admired by me. It shows how a few billion can deform the character in profound ways without the individual himself knowing.

Facebook was really helping my side business before the plague. I think you get out of it what you put into it. I have always kept social media at arm's length and block/unfollow content or people I find annoying.

Sadly, @sablebrush52 is totally right...this is very, very likely not the first time any of the affected users' data would have been leaked in some way. This is a large leak, but not uncommon. Pretty sure fb/insta had a comparable leak in 2019 after it was discovered they were storing user pw's in plain text (ffs people).

You're totally correct.

I don't need Facebook for a data breach. My data's been breached through eBay, Amazon, Target and many more. Hell, I work part-time at a bank and that bank account was hacked. Nobody is safe.

I use FB to stay in touch with far away friends and family. It works for me. I have a handful of friends I can visit tomorrow that I have not seen for 15 years because of staying in touch on FB. I am aware that my user data is sold and the trade-off is worth it for me at the moment. You can use social media without shouting at strangers or getting your echo chamber news that way. It's a choice.
