This happens to me somewhat often, most often with VA based blends, and it's pretty frustrating. I chalk it up to conditions, dry time, and what I had to eat/drink that day. A few days ago I had the exact same experience with SJF. First bowl was FANTASTIC, but the next day I loaded up a pipe with a second bowl from the same batch of dried tobacco, but smoked it after a nap when I'd allowed myself to dry out a bit (here in AZ you've gotta have a glass of water before a nap to avoid waking up thirsty), and didn't taste a thing except for harshness.

I get that quite often. My whole tobacco experience tells me that very few tobaccos taste like the last time I smoked them. I don't blame it on the tobacco. So much goes into the enjoyment of tobacco. That's part of what makes it so much fun. it's impossible to get a conclusion on what makes that happen.

Sometimes it's an off day. I had one not too long ago, I had made some ribbon cut whole leaf blends and let them dry a bit too much, everything was subdued and bitey. It happens sometimes, but usually can pin it down to some issue like tobacco moisture. Gotta get the sweet spot of moisture for each blend.

I'm in the foothills of the Bradshaw above you and I find the low humidity here is good for Tobacco and pipe "resting". When I lived back east humidity was a problem with wetter smokes and the length of time that I thought I needed to let a pipe dry out.

Definitely a lot of factors as everyone keeps saying, but your own physiology is one of them. I love Escudo and Burley Flake #1, but every now and then even those will taste blah to me, even when I know for a fact that all other things were equal/the same as I usually: same pipe, same pack, same time, same humidity, etc. The human body is incredibly complex and is constantly going through thousands of different processes that we are not aware of, and these absolutely effect taste and palate.

I agree. It's nice to be able to set out enough Tobacco for a bowl for 5-10 minutes and have it be ready to smoke. Back when I lived in a humid climate (MN) I didn't really smoke a pipe much so I don't really have a comparison. However, for cigars, I find that I sometimes have to "dry box" for an hour or two or I am dealing with split wrappers in the 5-10 percent RH around here.

Also, another benefit of living where we do: Our weather is now getting better and better for pipe smoking! While all of our more temperate compatriots on the forum are dealing with snow/ice/cold/rain (I think it was @didimauw who set up a tent with a space heater in his backyard last winter), we in AZ have the most wonderful winters in the world!
