Welcome! As you live in Chicago do all your pipes have wind caps ?
Heh. Has been a windy week in fact & I did catch a face-full of ash & embers the other day. ?Welcome! As you live in Chicago do all your pipes have wind caps ?
No, I was doing business in the area. Unfortunately ran out of time and didn't end up going ?You get paid tomorrow too, eh? ?
I still want to run out that way this weekend. There’s an antique mall that I recall has a couple dozen estate pipes (quality, condition & price unknown) & it’s having a holiday sale, so if I do check that out AP&C is right close by.No, I was doing business in the area. Being newish in the hobby I still tend to the traditional, but that’s pretty slick - a little cyberpunk even. ?
Yep. My dad used to mess with younger folks about it, esp. since I double-dipped at UI-UC for seven years. Dad would say he went to U of I too … at Navy Pier. They’d look at him like he had a screw loose, or at least there was a punchline they couldn’t figure out. Then he’d explain how it was a real thing, a post-WW2 GI Bill setup years before there was a UIC.When I first commuted to college from the suburbs, U of I had a satellite campus in Chicago on Navy Pier, and the cafeteria was at the end, and you could eat outside.
Sure is. The Italian-American neighborhood on Taylor found out the hard way just how little clout it had once Boss Daley decided he wanted a full U of I campus in the city. The story of how - and where - UIC came to be is a fascinating case study in Chicago politics.
The whole state university board wanted an extension in the city. Weyerhouser (maybe Honeywell? Some large industrial concern) had a huge acerage campus on what is now the green line in Garfield Park that they wanted to evacuate for the suburbs that they were willing to exchange for tax and environmental forgiveness. But the pharaoh wanted to punish the Italians and mess with the feds putting a highway interchange in.Sure is. Hello and welcomePicked up a pipe (again) earlier this fall. Fiddled with one a bit in college but it didn’t stick. Dad was a pipe smoker & now I’m kicking myself that I let his get away when he & mom downsized for the retirement community. Made my first pilgrimage to Iwan Ries; picked up a ridiculously sexy Savinelli Fantasia that I’m still too intimidated to fire up. Haven’t settled on a preferred smoke (pipe or tobacco) yet, although this early I lean toward aromatics. Currently buying myself way too many early Christmas presents on eBay. Find that I enjoy rehabbing nasty old estate pipes almost as much as smoking them once they’re ready. That about cover it?
