So, some people really do get their history from Hollywood. Fascinating!rotf
Why do suppose Shindler's List was filmed in sepia tones? It confuses simple minds. They think they actually experienced something. They will become belligerent when it is pointed out.

And they’re doing it to us again...
AIG is still selling credit default swaps and they don't have the money to cover them. These type of derivatives were outlawed in 1908 for good reason. Every CEO from Goldman Sachs,Chase, Citi, AIG, Stanley Morgan should have something done to them, Not make billions. The worst of all were the cred rating agencies for rating absolute shit loans as AAA ad they were complete junk, never should have had a B-. Then of course was the Security Exchange Omission who should have gone to jail for criminal fraud. They let all this happen.

I have no idea how this plays out, all I know is I moved most of my money to cash that is guaranteed by the FDIC. I don't put more than 250000 in any one bank as that is all you are insured to,

Or could it could be that Steven Speilberg filmed it this way to give his audience the best possible experience and the most entertainment for their money. I mean, I don’t know about you, but I’ve been to Holocaust museums before and I can’t stand to be in them for more than 30 minutes. It’s kinda hard to make that subject entertaining or endurable. Not everything is a conspiracy to dupe us “simple minded” folk.

Spielberg (and Tarantino) is very skilled at telling a certain kind of story. But his vision is distorted and it misinforms the public. His movies rewrite historical events and contain blatant untruths. Consumers believe they have witnessed accurate news reels and that they "know" the truth. His is a conscious and deceitful act and part of a larger effort to exact control of a powerful and lucrative victim narrative.

Your argument is that it is about making money and aesthetics. Keeping people in their seats while painful truth is being conveyed. Well, I agree with you about the former but not the latter. It is about money in as far as money is a means to maintaining power. But the issue is primarily about maintaining a victim narrative as a means to power. About controlling mass culture. It does this by of way of informing a consensus around certain issues. We were discussing the Milgram Experiments of the 1960's. Similar issue. It attempts to distort public perception about the "dark corners of the soul". The problem is that is content producers of this sort need to use falsified data and outright lies to do this to complete their task.

Media can subvert democracy because it can inculcate a distorted narrative about human nature and events. People conduct their lives believing they understand human nature as dark and with a propensity toward authoritarianism. And they are taught think about their lives as if they are acting in their own best interests when the exact opposite is the case. People believe they are being informed, educated or merely being entertained. When in actuality, their self interests are being harmed and misinformed

Oookay. Conspiracy theory it is...

How about we put down our Nietzsche & Solzhenitsyn books, pause our Audible rendition of Carl Jung’s Red Book and hide our dusty old copy of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion (you know, the book that drove Henry Ford mad) and simply enjoy a pipe together? puffy

Not that I disagree with you, my friend, but this is a pipe forum.

And, besides, we’re not all that willfully uninformed.

Shirley, oops, sorry! Surely more than one member is man enough to admit getting their knowledge of history from movies?

Producers do indeed finance movies with a message. But they want a return on investment and the message has to match their belief or understanding of what ever facts are available. Actors/actresses simply say lines for a paycheck unless they have an ownership stake in the production. Then, they may aver a deep belief in the message for the public's benefit.

Remember, one person's fact is another person's fiction with respect. Some people still disbelieve the world is round despite incontrovertible proof obvious simply by observing shadows.

There is no point in owning a newspaper, TV station, movie script, or blog unless you can 'flog" your beliefs. Not much different then "cake/no cake" discussion to simplify. People do indeed attend movies which make them uncomfortable, if the movie agrees with their preconceived notions/beliefs. No agreement usually equals ... walking out early.

And it is tiring and a bit disappointing. Critical thinking is difficult indeed. I'm gonna watch a made for TV golf game.

Dissembling... I think you meant to say “Keep your sanity” is not an unexpected response. Remember, Nietzsche went insane, Jung went to the edge of insanity, and their modern day (want to be) incarnation, Jordan Peterson is recovering from his bout with insanity. If you stare too long into the abyss, the abyss stares back...and it is eternal...and you (or I) are not.

Think what you want about the Milgram experiments and the others who replicated it...I don't believe they were fraudulent, but regardless, no study is necessary to demonstrate that blind obedience to authority is one of the most common aspects of human nature...because it's so painfully obvious.

History as well as current events are filled with blatant examples of it. How anyone could not recognize that is difficult for me to comprehend...numerous clear examples could easily be cited. Yes, many historical accounts of all types are distorted...sometimes intentionally...but those of us who are old enough have lived through numerous events over the last several decades where the "official narratives" are filled with holes, contradictions and impossibilities, but the vast majority of people accept it all as unquestionable truth simply because the "authorities" tell them it is so. This blind acceptance of official narratives by a great majority of people is one obvious example, so you are defeating your own argument imo.

But another very common aspect of human nature is that people tend to believe what they want to believe and debate seldom changes anyone's mind.

Anyone remember this incredible story? All done only over the phone by someone claiming to be a police officer...and carried out 60 times with similar results.

This pleases me. I’m not too bright, and I was almost starting to think a Fascist Holocaust denier had walked in to a documentary recommendation thread.

Speculating on human nature.
I suppose it depends on who the "authorities" are and their motives.

Let's look at it this way: Suppose that all movies, TV news media, school textbooks... in essence everything outside of a person's immediate experiences was produced by space aliens from the planet Saturn. These works were promoted by special experts. Saturn approved, appointed spoke models as sophisticated or cool. Earth people no longer had any means to accurately judge things. In fact, they mistrusted their own eyes. Earth's past held lessons of its brave heroes. But those men were now called villainous and self serving- even genocidal. The very idea of acting in a self sacrifice for Earth's people was mocked and ridiculed.

In movies and TV, it was flatly stated as fact that anyone who even thought about fighting back was a uneducated brute. Those who tried to fight were subjected to the withering full force of Saturn. Survivors were relentlessly hunted down. Their grandchildren were re educated and riddled with guilt and burdened with debt. It served as a poignant example.

Earth's sons began to want to emulate criminals that they were shown in movies or on TV. They did terrible things to their own families. Earth's daughters wanted to emulate prostitutes or deformed freaks. The people from Saturn generated odd and complicated ideologies and theories to justify the changes to the culture of Earth. Earth women were told that they could no longer trust their men. Normal Earth men were not good enough anymore. That Earth men will eventually and invariably always gravitate towards power trips and authoritarianism. In fact "experts" had put on lab coats, done experiments and proven the Earth people were evil at the core. These "experiments" were repeated in radio play dramas and in woven into the plots of spy novels. Even in the loud unmusical rhythms emanating from the radio. Earth's sons were discouraged by the confusion and bitterness from their women and turned to pornography for solace, you guessed it- produced by the Saturn people.

Furthermore, all "experts" had to be credentialed by universities staffed by Saturn people. In fact mentioning the alien presence at all could get an Earther shunned and expelled from his college. Removed from friends and family. Banned or fired from jobs. It was said that anyone who would entertain such a thought was beneath contempt or at best mentally ill. In some regions, old Earthers from the before time-doubters, were put in prison for even bringing up the subject. Once an early Saturn psychologist went so far as to write that all Earthers secretly wanted to sleep with their parents. These theories became part of the intellectual cannon. Decades went by and people liked to entertain themselves by speculating on human nature. But it was difficult to do because they were operating from a faulty premise. How could they be properly blamed when every single time they sought knowledge, the well spring had been poisoned.

Hey Alexa. Define incredible:

  • Not credible; that cannot be credited; surpassing the possibility of belief.
