I'm a bit late to the party, but here's my tuppenceworth.

A favourite pipe of mine is a Ropp Flammee. Bought estate with a slight mark much like the that on the shank of the proposed puchase across the rear of the bowl.

Lovely smoker for a couple of years and then general incompetence led to me dropping it out of my mouth onto concrete. Disaster! The mark became a crack that radiated out to the rim of the bowl. A total loss.

Or so you might have thought. A drill, some fine steel wire, and a bit of ingenuity saw its rebirth. Leaking of smoke through the cracks soon reduced to virtually nothing by the cake build-up. Still a fovourite and good as "new".
