Looks like a popular question - same answer - yes and no and not necessarily because I can taste the difference but just in case with a couple pipes and a few other more like sentimental kind of reasons or no good reasons, lol.

Question: I wipe my bowls down pretty well with a damp paper towel after each use, not building up "cake" - does this inhibit or prevent any of the ghosting that may occur?
Inhibits, yes, but not as much as a full flush with hot water followed by the paper towel.

I have one cob I dedicated to crooner and aromatics that I don't mind tasting like crooner. All my other pipes get used for everything. I did have to thoroughly clean a pipe that I had smoked several bowls of Squadron Leader in, because it was making everything else taste like squadron leader.

In the beginning...

I never pondered that a pipe could influence the tobacco, or that the tobacco would flavor a pipe with subsequent blends. I was simply trying a few different blends & getting my feet wet.

Later I began discovering that the same blends tasted different in different pipes. This encouraged both reading about others experiences with the phenomenon, as well as fueling my personal exploration. But the results remained mysterious for some time.

Now I have a sense of what type of blend a particular pipe might do well with before I begin. Mostly I'm right, sometimes I'm wrong.

As it is now, some pipes got dedicated to a particular blend, mostly from some whimsical reason about how the 2 play together or how / when I first used them together.

Some of my pipes I liked from the beginning, and they smoked well enough, but just weren't quite "right", and I may have tried a dozen blends in one until it behaved the way I preferred, and the 2 got paired up.

I also have some workhorse pipes that I will sometimes go back and forth between English & Virginia blends, enjoying the lingering but receding flavor of the previous style.

Yet others are simply used within the confines of certain genres.

And yes, I do find that pipe / blend combinations can provide VASTLY different experiences and I tend to do what I can to pay attention and replicate the better experiences as best I can.

Mostly, still enjoying the adventure of the variety all the way around. By paying attention to my taste experiences and carefully reading about contents and reviewers ratings, I've found that I enjoy most blends that I open, as long as they're in my preferred genre.

No dedicated pipes on my rack so far. The reasons are that I don't smoke any blends with exaggerated ghosting problems like Lakeland aromatics; I do not build cake, scooping out ash and wiping out the chamber after each smoke; and I have a lot of pipes all of which get rested, often for months, between smokes. Latakia, Perique, and aromatic flavorings don't ghost my pipes, or at least I can't taste it, which is the same thing to me.

I'm glad I don't feel I have to dedicate pipes. Pipe smoking is supposed to be a function of relaxing and emotionally releasing stress, and one more compulsion would not enhance that for me.

If I bought a tin of Visions of Celephais, the grape flavored aromatic from C&D, I might designate a cob for that, at least until I saw how the flavor carried over, or didn't. I'd try a simple burley in it after a dozen smokes to see if I could taste any grape. If I couldn't, then I'd put the cob back on line for any blend.
I’ve never tried any Lakelands and from the sounds of it might only attempt a few like Kendal Flake. Keep hearing about “soapy taste”.

I dedicate pipes to blend genres with a great deal of discipline. I primarily smoke Virginia blends. If I smoke a VaPer or VaOr in one of my Virginia pipes, I absolutely can taste the Perique or Oriental flavors when I smoke a straight Virginia next. That may, or may not, be pleasant but it's not what I want.

That’s interesting. This brings up another question that I might make a separate post for. It’s understandable to have a favorite pipe for a specific tobacco, but is it because it tastes and smokes better due to the shape of the pipe? Maybe we made the decision to pack it with something we enjoy and just continued to smoke it from there? How much do we actually know about the depth, diameter, draw, draft size/length…. that plays key roles in getting more flavor from certain blends?

My beater pipes hang in the garage while I work. I tend to biting whilst freehand working. They get the beatings.

Yes. I have aromatic pipes and pipes for latakia, Virginia’s and lakeland’s. So four classifications. I almost always start a pipe on Virginia. If those smokes don’t taste good to me, I will try the pipe with other genres until I find the proper fit.

I'm not too fussy in regards to dedicating pipes beyond with/without Latakia.

I selected my pipes based on what new pipe I had with whatever new tobacco I had.

I like to keep it simple. Pipe smoking is not brain science or rocket surgery....

Haven’t tried any Match tobacco yet. Might be a bit before I do. Still haven’t read much about them.
