When it comes to dentistry as with any medical procedure, my experience is people vary widely. What is pretty simple for one is very complicated for another. It appears to me, pain thresholds and mental attitudes account for a great deal of this. Ice packs with a filter to prevent frostbite ( cloth of some kind ) or gel packs, are a great help for me. I had my wisdom teeth out, 1 at a time, during college, as needed. My oldest daughter had hers out all at once in a hospital.

Hind sight being 20/20, I might have had them all out at once. I have always had trouble keeping the rear of my molars properly brushed anyway. My wisdom teeth were impacted and would have been a nightmare to live with. Everyone needs to evaluate the best path for themselves, but I would be aware of insurance options!

Too bad you are getting knocked out. I had mine taken out about a decade ago, when I did I opted for novacaine and had the wonderful experience on hearing them snapping apart my teeth and pulling them out in pieces. I will say the painkillers were awesome afterwards.

Great choice, Laphroaig. It's at the top of my list. You, my friend, have good taste. I was told by my dentist 30 years ago that one of my wisdom teeth was infected and all four had to come out. He got the first one, but the other three still reside in my head.

Yeah I had mine pulled the same dentist appointment the dentist told me he was going to pull them. The dentist before him told me they were some of the nicest teeth he'd ever seen in his whole career. The gums got sore at the back of my mouth. I was awake when it was done, first the top 2 and then 2 weeks later the bottom. My gums still get sore and I'm pretty sure it was just a cash grab by the dentist. I haven't gone to a dentist in about 10 years now, no problems, just the same places get sore where my wisdom teeth were about once a year. I totally regret getting them pulled.

My wisdom teeth story is fro when I had mine out, back around 1990 or so. Had all four done at once. At the time they gave me a full injection of knockout stuff so I went to sleep for the operation... BUT, I started to come around early, too early. I can still vividly remember the cracking sounds and the pain from them breaking out the last couple of teeth.
What's funny about this is that because my wife was working, I asked my mom to pick me up at the office and drive me back to the house. She said that she was sitting out in the waiting room with a bunch of patients with appointments, including several kids, and they could hear me screaming all the way from the operating room. All I can remember is the intense pain but she said the whole waiting room was getting extremely edgy and nervous listening to the howling and yowling from in back.

when I got mine pulled, I as (thankfully) put under so I went in on thursday, got knocked out by the doctor man, woke up, and it was saturday. Apparently I was on some good drugs and I don't remember much of friday.
My mother claims that I spent most of the time puking up the chocolate pudding that I was trying to eat and that I said "at least it tastes as good going up!"

I had two pulled last week. Prior to the procedure, they pout me on penicillin, and I had a severe allergic reaction to the penicillin which produced a massive rash over my entire body, including my legs and feet, it was like giant red bumps like mosquito bites. That sucked extreme. So anyway they put me on this OTHER antibiotic just prior to the teeth pulling, and gave me a shot in the tuchus in order to stop the rash. I don't know if you've ever had a shot in the ass, but it is zero fun man. Like they hit a nerve back there and it hurts major. So anyway. The actual dental procedure was okay, but the new antibiotic gave me Severe Antibiotic-Induced Colitis, so for the past 3 days I have had the most extreme diarhea I have ever had in my life, literally nothing has been helpful, I have been completely unable to sit down without extreme pain and literally every 30 minutes I am rushing to the restroom, it has been totally insane. So last night I ended up going back to the doc and they put me on a third antibiotic and a probiotic thing which is supposed to solidify my stool, and cure my gastrointestinal tract from the bacteria which developed. So I have a slowly fading body-wide rash, massive uncontrollable diarhea, and two huge holes in my jaw.

Adam 12 that sucks dude, I had double pneumonia about five years ago all the antibiotics gave me a C Diff infection (Clostridium Diifenciale) sounds like what you have I was in the hospital in a diaper, five minutes after a drink of water no pun but it's crappy. Feel better and be real careful of dehydration you'll end up in the hospital on an IV drip. :worship:

Okay, I'm a bit of a rebel I suppose, but 4 years ago I had to get fake choppers. All of my teeth. In one sitting. Just Novacaine, wide awake. Let's say I was a bit nervous.
The doctor told me no smoking the day of the extractions and for several days after. I smoke ryo besides pipes and, yes, I am a nicotine junkie. That wasn't happening. I put out a smoke as I was walking into the office (I walked, because I couldn't drive home afterwards for some reason and while I had a ride home, she wasn't available to bring me in. No biggie really). My ride wasn't there right away after getting my teeth yanked and, when the doctor turned his head, I went outside, rolled one up and smoked it. No issues, but I know it was stupid as I was risking about 30 dry sockets. Got lucky I guess.
Just saying, relax. It's never as bad as it seems it's going to be.

Had all four of mine surgically removed back in 1975 at 17 years of age.. My recollection is that it was no fun at all but short lived. It was quite a while after before I had a pipe. of course the fact that I picked up pipe smoking in 1978 may have had something to do with that. :puffpipe:
