On a non-political note, 41 was also captain of a College World Series champion baseball team. Here's a picture of a young Naval aviator-turned jock with another guy who was pretty good at baseball:

I didn't agree with his policies all the time, but I do think he made political decisions he felt were in the best interest of the American people. Rest in peace President Bush Sr.

Richard Press (heir to the proprietors of classic New Haven clothing store J. Press) once said he was at that game, and actually got his program signed by both The Babe and GHWB, though it's been lost in the years since. But wow what a memento!

I've been reading this thread form the beginning, and have thought about posting my my experiences with GW to it. Like most newspaper photographers at the time, I had numerous opportunities to photograph George Bush over the years: On the campaign trail as a veep candidate, then as veep, then campaigning for the oval office, etc etc. He always impressed me as a genuine individual with a great sense of humor and a strong moral compass. But my experiences meeting him were nothing when compared to another former newspaper photographer that I know:

Bush 41's speedboat was no toy. I heard an interview with someone who'd been aboard, and it was a hair-raiser. I think G.H.W. reported hitting 63 mph in a light chop, which on the water is light speed. That's the famous cigarette boat often pictured, mostly from afar. Details on the power plant would be interesting. Someone who sky dives in his seventies and eighties has a taste for adrenaline and a lot of luck. Of course, he postponed Yale to be a combat pilot in the Pacific during WWII. Under all that New England refinement was a pretty fierce customer. His father's first name was a last name back in the 19th Century in my family, so could be a very distant relation.

...looked a little more ... cigarette boats have twin V-8's with a total of 1000 hp, and the drug runners get them up to 90 mph, but 63 is way fast, no mistakes allowed.

I too have a small, personal, vignette. I did, or directed, the local security efforts for many dignitaries in my career. The location of Anchorage dictated many stopovers for the world leaders, Popes, presidents, PM's, etc. President Bush was the only one to summon me to his hotel suite and personally thank me for the efforts of my officers. A photo, not machined signed, with a small sentiment arrived on my desk two days later.
His handshake was firm, his eyes kind and his thanks sincere. To me his entire life was a shining example of what being an American is all about, hard work, selfless public service and, for me most importantly, without malice. I'll never measure up to that but, I try.
Again, rest in honorable peace Mr. President.

warren, an impressive testimonial. Many leadership figures completely look past the citizenry that serves them. It's a big plus when they show genuine gratitude. I think his wife Barbara had spine to spare, and I believe she kept him in touch with the best in himself. Big points for their long life together.

Very cool Warren. I sometimes meet people with different views on politics and nevertheless I find them to be good people who I trust and like to spend time with. Conversely I sometimes meet people who have similar political/world views who I don't like or trust. A lot can be garnered from a handshake and a look in the eyes. I've never met someone in a position of such immense power as G.H.W. Bush but I imagine it would be the same. His was a life of public service and for that I'm grateful.

I love the service dog GHW had at the end, a Golden Lab with a gentle understanding face, that made the trip to Washington D.C. for the services. Now he will be reassigned to Walter Reed Hospital to assist veterans there. Peoples' best friend indeed. And what a boost for the patients at Walter Reed to be attended by the service dog of a President.

About the service dog, I believe GHW named the dog, and his name is Sully, after the pilot who landed the passenger jet on the river in New York, saving all aboard. This would have been a tribute from one brave pilot to another.

I was in the 3rd US Infantry, The Old Guard, and had the honor of working security for his inauguration. It was a great honor to serve him! I was presidential escort throughout his presidency. Many great memories of this great man! RIP, Mr. President! Salute!
