@edger, which tins were they, flake or the rubbed out?
Rubbed Out was my favourite, strong & slow burning, heady & with a subtle sweetness....ridiculously good smoke! Unfortunately nothing even remotely similar nowadays. The strength, leaf quality & flavouring of the old school British & Irish blends just aren't about. As good as Gawith Hoggarth, Germains etc are they still fall short of & are nothing like Gallahers RDH.

Having said that though, it's not all 'doom & gloom'. You can still find an 'old school' vibe with the tobacco that's available today. If I remember rightly, like me you're found of your bantam bowls? If your grandad was where you are now, sat in the states I reckon he'd be smoking 3 P's in a bantam bowled falcon & more likely than not he'd be happy with that. So that's what I'd humbly suggest to you mucker, 3 P's in a falcon. ?
Gawith's Plugs are even better but you might struggle to get them where you are. Those Cascadia Plugs you can get in the states are pretty good too & might be worth a try. Even better still, ask your family in the auld country to send you over a plug of Yachtsmans from Fox's in Dublin.
