Flea Market Find - Leonard Payne(Canada)

My flea market find yesterday. A pipe made in canada Leonard Payne. Not much information online except a small pipedia article and reborn pipes did a refurbish article too. Leonard moved to Canada and set up shop in the 60's, at some point moving into Surrey BC, where I currently live and found the pipe. Its pretty neat to have a little piece of pipe history from here.

Its an interesting pipe for sure, the bit has two holes on the side instead of on the end, kinda like a double barrel sideways p-lip. Never seen that before( he was a bit of an eccentric pipe maker apparently). Nice looking quality straightish grain briar with what seems like no fills. I was planning to buy and sell after I cleaned it up, but I'll have to give it a smoke and see if I can part with it.

Interesting pipe! I sort of like that sideways p lip setup. The bowl reminds me of a honey spoon.

Interesting stem/bit. Do the two holes in the bit lead to one airway in the stem? In other words...is there one or two holes at the tenon end of the stem? It's a cool looking pipe.

Dunhill still makes a radiator pipe, and I have seen them in all various price levels. That's a unique example. I do admire flea markets that turn up such pipes. In central N.C., I rarely turn up anything -- flea market, yard sale, antique store, whatever. My only explanation is that this was such a cigarette manufacturing center that grandpas just didn't smoke many pipes. It's an estate pipe desert. My older generation in-laws, my late wife's people, didn't smoke pipes and never had. When I did, it felt like I was doing a Yankee thing, being from the North. To her credit, one of my wife's aunts bought me a beautiful Bari bent billiard for Christmas, which I still have and enjoy, with a great big bowl, but not heavy weight. Great Danish factory pipes; this one still looks almost new after forty plus years.

And the results? Interesting...and pretty good, nice draw, definitely cool smoke, even with a steady cadence. Gives a more body to my black stoved va/per at the cost of just a little sweetness.

The mechanics are a little strange as you can imagine, still works for clenching on the side but works better when held slightly more in the mouth as it can direct the smoke right on the inside lip when clenched at the edge of the bit. I sometimes clench this way anyway as I usually hold my pipe half the time so not a big deal for me.

The two airways meet in the middle and pass a pipe cleaner with only a bit of effort.

Dispite the small size the bowl is still decent, about .75 x 1.25.

All in all a good pipe, that smokes well and gives the tongue a break if needed and offers a cool smoke, different flavour and unique experience. It's engineered well with the tenon fitting well into the mortise with little to no gap.

I haven't decided if I'm keeping it, as I'm not much of a collector and already have my fair share of nice pipes. But the by historical factor is kinda neat for me. We'll see, might throw it on my eBay. Wondering if it will be a hard sell since they aren't very common. I'll think(and smoke) about it.
