LOL ... Fortunately I didn't have to resort to such measures since society hasn't yet fully collapsed, and it's still possible to see a dentist.

Seriously, the dental surgeon had my same full name. I had to have two wisdom teeth pulled and one other one next to one of them.

They put me out completely for it, which was best I suppose, because the laughing gas would have probably made things difficult for the surgeon if I had been chuckling the whole time.

I've finally learned to lie to all doctors about my tobacco use.

You need to use more care when finding a medical professional.

You also need to find out if the pain is caused by an infection or a damaged tooth. Could be sinus related even. Some infections can and do migrate to the heart. Then, quite possibly you'll no longer need medical advice. But, I'm sure someone here would be willing to get into your mouth with a pair of pliers and pull teeth until they found the right one. Some members tend to treat medical problems extremely cavalierly.

Most dentists are reasonably priced if you let them know up front you are paying cash.

Perhaps reasonably priced but very soon I have to shell out over $800 to fix 4 cavities. That money is hard to come with as a retiree.

Ask for a payment plan. Some dentists offer reduced prices for us old folks/retirees. Then there is part-time employment is allows by retirement plan. A friend needed an older male to run his hardware store in the evenings. I took the position simply to have a bit of purpose in life. And, horror of horrors, one could reduce his spending on luxury enjoyments and look after long term health needs such as smoking. Just a thought.

I'm very acquainted with toothache. Price: Fucking expensive even with insurance. Taking the fucker out: Fucking priceless.

Most people want to keep as many teeth as intact as possible. Denture ain't no joy. But, if your tooth is cracked and it's hitting the nerve, your options are do root canal and kill the nerves then fill it in. Or, yank it out. Of course, after yanking it out, you have few options to put implant or bridge. Or like me, keep that space unoccupied which isn't a great idea, but no issues with eating so I don't care. I opened too many beer bottles when younger.

Or your problem might be something else completely different. Going to see a dentist is a very good thing. If they have free consultation, take it.

I could cover the expense... It's not a matter of can't.

it's a matter of I'd rather just have a missing tooth in the back than pay $800 dollars or really even $200.

If it was a front tooth I'd get me a gold one.

And to the ones saying this is a life or death situation... no it is not. Haha

I'm also not actually looking for medical advice, just the opinions of those who have been there...

Some of you guys act like you're liable for my sore tooth if you don't give a disclaimer. That must create a feeling of self importance when you treat it like that.

We do have a doctor on this forum. I was hoping he'd chime in and say it was nothing to worry about.

Do so! I have two of them: I went for gold because ceramics suck: they will eventually crack, and I didn't want to end up with a cracked crown and being refused treatment because I didn't have the cl0t shot.

I have no experience but my brother finally got a root canal after years of living with a rotting tooth and to my knowledge he's happy with it.

When I started researching long term tooth care (just out of curiosity as I got older) I was impressed with the dental implants made by the company Bicon: Bicon Dental Implants - Bicon Dental Implants - https://bicon.com/
No affiliation, never heard of anyone using them, but as someone loosely familiar with precision machining the Bicon advertisements held my interest.
As much as anything I'm horrified by stories of elderly dental care so if anything ever goes wrong with my teeth at least I like the idea of having a goal for the outcome rather than just showing up at a dentist office with blind hope.

I got a dentist to pull a back tooth years ago. The cost to get it pulled and leave a hole was about 10% of the cost to get something new put in its place. Once it was pulled all the pain and stress went away, so it was worth paying for.

The reason it hurts so much is your body is telling you this is serious. That infection can spread to your jaw. At that point the costs involved in even a root canal will seem picayune. Ask me how I know. Believe me, $500 is waaay better than $50,000+, a year+ of being grotesque, and the pain involved in getting rid of the infection before it reaches your brain.

Yeah, I could just refrain from buying tobacco for a year and a half and I'd have the cost covered. Of course, I'll be out of tobacco in a month if I buy no more as I've never cellared.

My brother, if my memory serves me correctly, you were the gentleman that make a post regarding flossing and if it's really necessary when a "toothpick" does the trick? They are not anywhere near the same, and nothing can replace string flossing, not even a water floss.

From now on, learn to floss correctly and do it daily. You'll never have another toothache again.

Many have stated this already. Toothaches, like the climate, unfortunately appear to be limited to two just two colors when it comes to deciding if they are real or not or if they have consequences or not.

Yep. 35 years no cavities, no teeth problems at all. I'd say it was a good run.
