Hello all, I am about to place an order for my first couple pipes and some bulk tobacco to get me started along the journey. :)

I have smoked cigarettes off and on for 6 years, vaped the last 3 and it has gotten expensive and isn't really fitting my style of smoking. When I smoke I'm always outside, either reading or talking to friends and family, which consists of long sessions that I like to be smoking the whole time.

Which is why after some research and the recommendation from a friend at my local Kava bar, I have decided to drop the vape and cigs and order a pipe. I hope to be more mindful in my smoking practice and I'm looking forward to seeing more of the nuances of different strains of tobacco.

I'll be ordering the Cobbit Wizard and Great Dane by Missouri Meerschaum as my starter pipes, and would like some recommendations on good bulk tobacco options that wont break the bank but also taste great and will introduce me to different blends and flavors, I love Turkish blend cigarettes, so I'm thinking Turkish tobacco may be a good start.

I hope to be a long time member of this sub. :)

This isn't getting much cheaper either, I've only been pipe smoking since 2020 and have seen quite a few bumps in prices and increased taxes (on tobacco within my state).

Try some C&D Izmir if you like Turkish, its smooth, buttery, readily available and a good price. I like it on its own but you can add it to other varieties as well.

The best tobaccos for any new pipe smoker are the age old “drugstore blends”, because those were blended for mass appeal. They are light, won’t bite, and smell good, all of them.

My recommendation is Carter Hall.

I second or third the C&D bulk blends. A personal fave is John Marr. A nice blend with a light touch of vanilla & bourbon. English blends are a good starter too. They provide a lot of flavor without added toppings. They tend to burn cooler too, which is a plus if you’re used to smoking cigs(I tend to puff a little quicker than I should. Working on that). Welcome!

Congratulation friend, welcome to the more contemplative side of the fence.
I hope you find as much enjoyment as we all do exploring this wonderful pastime of ours.
The only drawback many of us find is that as you inevitably explore the many wonderful blends and pipes available to you as a new pipe smoker, you are also vulnerable to the two most voracious and fund suckin' disorders known to man. These are of course PAD and TAD. Just know that when they strike...and they will...we are here to guide, mock, admire and empathise during these difficult times and if ever you manage to cure yourself of these afflictions we will always be here to temp you back to the dark side of the bowl, we as enablers can assure you.
Happy smokes mate puffy
