Hello!
I’m Dennis - I’m in Las Vegas. I’ve perused the site a handful of times over the years, but only just made an account. Well, technically I made it over summer but missed the email to confirm or something and had to wait again for moderators to approve.
I technically picked up my first pipe in 2014, but was put off almost immediately. A MM Ozark and a bag of Captain Black Cherry…. To be fair I was NOT looking for the cherry, but that’s all the smoke shop had. The pipe was fine, but unsurprisingly I didn’t care for the tobacco. Threw them both away and moved on. A couple years later I picked up my first “real” pipe (June of 2017) so almost exactly 7.5 years ago. I am/have been a very sporadic smoker. I range anywhere from a bowl per day, to not even touching a pipe for many months a time. I’ve really picked back up in 2024. I was there for the demise of McLelland, but didn’t learn my lesson. I’ve learned it now with Sutliff - tobacco will never be cheaper than it is now, or more available, so I’m buying up what I like. Should’ve done it years ago (I was checking the invoices of my first tobacco purchases from 2017 out of curiosity the other day and comparing it to today’s prices - unsurprisingly everything is 50% - 100% more expensive than it was then).
As are many of you, I am deeply annoyed by the Sutliff situation. Obviously the whole thing in general sucks, but particularly because I only just found out about it! I saw smokingpipes had their Sutliff on sale for a couple days but didn’t buy anything (I don’t buy tobacco often so this was just like any old sale for me to ignore). If I had known I could have stocked up on some stuff I know I like, and finally tried a bunch of blends I’ve been curious about. I was able to find a couple pounds of my two known Sutliff favorites (Majestic English and their Balkan Sobranie Original match) but I had to buy them from other retailers and without any discount. I was happy to find them at all, but I would’ve loved saving 20%!
Curiously, after all this time I finally had my first experience TODAY where a blend was so disgusting that it literally made me feel physically sick. I’m not a particularly squeamish sort of fellow, so this was very surprising to me. One of the first things I bought 7.5 years ago was a tin of Dunhill Nightcap. I smoked a couple bowls (enjoyed it) and put the rest in a mason jar that’s been sealed up tight since then. Thought I’d try a bowl today as something of a treat (I know the Peterson stuff is the same, but I admit it feels special having the Dunhill name on it). I could only stomach a few puffs before I had to stop - there was an element to it that was just horrible. I can’t describe it, almost like a meat taste permeating my mouth - but not in a good way. Either my tastes have changed radically, or time has not been kind to this blend. For what it’s worth, I wasn’t purposely trying to age it or anything, it just worked out that way. I felt queasy, and now even hours later I feel sick if I even think about it. Very strange!
For a long time I couldn’t stand aromatics, and smoked pretty much exclusively English blends. However, I’ve been smoking almost nothing but 1-Q for about two months and have enjoyed every second of it. It’s weird how things change, but I smoke what I like and I like what I smoke.
Anyway, hopefully that’s not too much for an introduction! I’m curious if anyone else is in the area and knows of any brick and mortar establishments. I’ve only found one (the place where I bought my first pipe and tobacco actually) but they had a very small selection (maybe ten bulks and a dozen tins). In the years since it seems they’ve given up on pipes completely because after going in a couple months ago they had three tins and a half empty jar of obviously old 1-Q. A couple pipes literally covered in dust, and a ripped open bag of pipe nails. It was always cigar focused but it seems it’s only cigars now.
Glad to be here, and hopeful to hear from some of you!
