I smoke my Grabows without the filter. Does make the draw more open, but I can tighten that up through packing.

When smoking a corn cob pipe, I agree with cortezattic. The draw on a corncob without one is almost impossible. A filter is also nice to have when you're smoking a moist aromatic as it cuts down on the gurgle, and since the flavor of aromatic is so mild, you're really not missing much. Filter pipes are indeed easier to clean as the filter tends to suck up all the nasty liquidy gunk. I take the filter out of the pipe when I clean it and let it sit out in the open air until I am ready to use it again. This lets it dry out a little and I can tend to get anywhere from 3 to 4 smokes with one filter depending on how big the bowl is.

All of mine are filterless. I had a couple Dr Grabows that used filters, just didn't find any real benefit for me. I agree that it is a personal choice. If they work for you, by all means go for it.

I only Have 1 filter pipe a Medico in a shape i have never seen. I use the filter in it because with out it the draw is to open and its good for aromatics.

i use medico filters with my cobs an my medico pipe, but also have a straight brig and a bent brig. straight brig takes a cleaner perfect halfway thr the bowl but the bent will not accept the cleaner at all. gotta wait for it to cool before i can swab it, its kinda annoying, i think ill try takin an inch or so off the filter in the bent an try that

One more option is the E.A. Carey "Magic Inch" system. It helps reduce any moisture in the smoke, but without passing through a filter.
Personally I don't like filters, even in a MM Corn Cob, but some smokers wouldn't be without them. it is certainly something I consider when looking at a possible new pipe.

I have a couple of E. A. Carey Magic Inch pipes and I really like them both. They give them different names on their UK website, but I will PM you the links to the two I have. I like them because they remove moisture and cool the smoke without loosing flavour by passing it through a filter. You can also pass a pipe cleaner through to the bowl if you ever need to without removing the stem.

I have a few Weber filtersmoke pipes and a vauen that I smoke daily. They all take 9mm filters. I like them quite a bit. I also have many non-filtered pipes. I find that with straight pipes I have to pay much closer attention to the moisture content of the tobacco. It needs to be quite dry. The filter pipes are much more forgiving in this respect. Do what works for you, that's what I say.

I agree with "It's a personal choice"

I tend to leave the filters in my cobs that have them.
For me, the filter gets replaced after 3 smokes.

I don't use the filters on my Savinellis or any pipe for that matter. I like the open draw. I don't use them on my cobs either and I have no problems with ash passing through.
FYI, the Savinelli balsa filters works fine in MM cobs. If I were to use a filter, it would be the Sav system. I reserve the right to change my mind once I get a chance to try the Brigham system. Been curious but just haven't gotten around to pulling the trigger. I gather those who smoke them like them.

I maintain one filter cob for when I want to dampen down a full-strength blend, which is rarely. I use adaptors in filter pipes to make them non-filter, since for me, smoking without an adaptor gets too much air in the mix and diminished the flavor, a matter of personal choice. I'm intrigued that this thread was revived after years. I think filters, all the various varieties and interchangeable use of some (especially 6 mm filters and adaptors) is confusing to new pipe smokers, kind of a drag on their picking up the hobby, but essential to learn. A number of my Sav's were bought as non-filter pipes, and I have adaptors in the others. Other pipes I avoid just to avoid their different filtering systems -- Brigham, Carey, 9 mm, etc.

@MSO- I'm with you. If a filter pipe is the 6mm system, such as a Sav or Grabow, I'm in. Any of the others, I avoid for the same reason you do. I never filter cobs, but I do use balsa in my 6mm Grabows. I cut my own from balsa strip stock, so it is SUPER cheap.
Culling through the opinions and learning all the minutiae involved in this pursuit actually stimulated my interest in it when I was a new piper. That could just be me, though.

Unfiltered pipes are easier to clean.
I used to smoke with 9mm filter, cause here in Greece, unfiltered pipes are not what smoke shops sell.
Filter pipes create more moisture and are not as tasty as unfiltered.

I avoid filtered Briars. There are some Savinellis I like that seem to be only available filtered, but I won't buy them. When I was interested in Cobs, I got a couple with filters and I used half a pipe cleaner doubled over as a replacement.

I used to smoke with Savinelli or Vauen filters, but recently I switched to smoking unfiltered 3mm pipes. Some people prefer restricted air flow, I think this makes it easier to draw more smoke with smaller sips. Secondly a filter will remove some ash, nicotine, and whatever undesirable substances there are; but as long as you don't inhale the smoke, I don't think this is too much of an issue. Thirdly, and this is perhaps the main benefit of all filters, is that they trap moisture from your mouth, so if you are a wet smoker, you won't have to periodically sticking pipe cleaner down the air hole.
