I am pretty new to pipes (been a cigar smoker for a few years, but like the ritual and relaxation of the pipe). I have problems with tongue-bite and have found that the savinelli balsa filters help me greatly. I have also heard that Churchwarden pipes help with cooling the smoke also. However, I cannot seem to find one that accommodates a filter. Savinelli did make the Qandale, but it is no longer in production. Do you have any experience with Churchwardens? Do they not need the filter due to the longer stem? Any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Don't believe everything you read. The speed the smoke travels, a pipe would have to be several feet long to really cool the smoke. Technique cools the smoke more than anything.

Thank you for your replies. I guess I should have been a bit more specific. I did see those 2 qandales at smokingpipes.com, but not in the bowl shape that I prefer (315 ks rusticated) [I like a thick walled pipe to absorb the heat a bit better. And I did see the Vauen pipes, but they are about double my budget ($100 is my upper limit). But thank you for the assistance.

Very welcome. It's sad how pipe prices have risen in recent years. I had three of the Auenlands six years ago, and each were $95.

I find churchwardens do cool smoke but so minimally it's not going to make a difference. I don't know if that makes sense. What they do is keep the smoke out of your face. But they're not going to make a noticable difference in the smoking experience. If you want a cooler pipe filters, system pipes, or falcons are where it's at if you are sticking to briar. Again none of this are going to fix too hot smoking but will minimixe it. What does work is to slow down and sip the pipe, make sure it's packed not too tight and this is really big that the tobacco is dryer.

Here's a Molina Churchwarden that takes a 9mm filter. I have a couple of Molinas, pretty good smokers at a reasonable price.

A good alternative to the Qandale is Clark's Favorite although it may not be what you're looking for.

Savinelli also makes other pipes you just don't see very often like this Autograph Freehand Churchwarden:

Nothing satisfies the itch to buy a pipe better than
buying it. C'mon just get carried away and do not consider price or appearance.

(Enabling PAD is one of the chief functions of pipe boards; TAD is the other).

BTW, is that your pussycat astride your shoulders? I love it when cats do that!

Itching and scratching! Although my cat does like to be up on my shoulder, my profile picture is not me, but someone who I hope to emulate in a few years.

My NOS 80s UTOR Churchwarden cost $20 [ebay] and is a much better smoker than my Savinelli Churchwarden that I paid $115. Not that I think that either smokes any cooler than my standard length pipes.

Regarding tongue bite; moist aromatics and [fresh] straight Virginia blends are often the culprit.
Too much moisture creates steam.
Then there's mouth pH chemistry to consider [why a blend will bite some but not others.]

A couple of blends bite me with every puff while another will leave my mouth scorched after I've smoked two or more bowls of it over a day.

Since you're a newbie, I'd recommend you avoid aromatics of the moist and sticky variety and stick to semi-aromatics and non-aro's.
Buy 1oz each of a range of genres to find your preference.

When I found tobaccoreviews and pipe forums I barely had a clue.
Learning all the leaf types, how they taste from the spine of so many blends - Virginia, Burley, Virginia/Burley and Cavendish types, to the condimental leaves like Oriental/Turkish, Perique and Latakia - made choosing untried blends much easier.
Now I can pretty much tell what I'd like or not just by the leaf and toppings used [Rum and vanilla yum. Cherry not so good. Blackcurrant yuck] and reviews.

If you find that you're getting bit by more than a few blends of different genres, then you need to look at your technique.

Oh! Now you all have got me itching to buy a churchwarden! I doubt I would use a filter, I don't bother with filters will any of my other smokes.
Same. I don't like how a filter inhibits the draw.
Having said that, filters can come in handy. They help with blends that are a bit bitey and since I smoke milder blends, a carbon filter does calm stronger blends enough for me to enjoy.

The Auenland churchwarden is so far, the ONLY pipe that has never bitten my tongue, even when puffing in earnest. Get one.

I use White Elephant Meerschaum 9 mm filters in mine, because the Dr Perls can impart a plasticky taste when they become saturated with moisture. Again, no bite issues.

The only very long stem pipes I own are clays & they do cool the smoke.

Doing a quick search I see that Vauen offers filtered church wardens. They’re quite a bit more expensive than the pipe posted earlier in this thread however.

Thank you for everyone who replied. I hope I found a good solution, but I ended up going with the Stanwell Hans Christian Anderson no. 2. It is a bent Dublin prepared to take a 9mm filter and it comes with 2 stems, one standard size and one churchwarden size. And it was on sale :). I already ordered it, but I'm curious if anyone has any experience with Stanwells?
