I’m seeing two different things going on when using a Meerschaum filter.
It’s not removing flavors, it’s making the blend more delicate/light. So I can see how this is perceived as some sort of muting.
But, I’ve also noticed without a filter, that the tar and nicotine, that a filter reduces, these things also stand in the way of flavors too.
I find that flavors can be more distinguished with a filter, because I see nicotine and the tar can also alter/mute flavors.
I‘m really enjoying using the White Elephant Meerschaum filters, I find it creates a more refined elegant smoke, but you have to sip and smoke even slower to appreciate it, especially in good complex blends.

Well yes and no. My passion for not using filters in 9mm filter pipes, the benefits of which I can explain thus: get a stick and put it down the toilet, pull it out again, now you have a non-stick pan.
