My goodness Brobs, do you live in a monastery? Horses are used, thousands, daily in New York City, Chicago and other cities. Horses are still the best way to hunt in my opinion. They really shine for crowd control, much better than lines of patrol officers in many cases. Work a cattle ranch in timber country? Horses. The Kentucky Derby provides for the economic health of a city with little else. (I know! I'm being provincial for a purpose.) Calgary or Cheyenne without the rodeo? A great loss to our heritage.
Then there are the thousands of kids in 4H with their horses, pigs, cows, goats and what not. Not all of us are "big city" fans. Horses provide help for autistic children learning to socialize. And, they are simply essential for the dreams of many girls as they grow up. The relationship between many people and their horse is akin to that of the human/dog relationship and, horses live long compared to dogs.
I suppose your narrowly defined world is quite comfortable but, really, you should expand your horizons and enlarge your circles of interest. There are many people with differing opinions you might grow to tolerate.

""Imitation" anything is usually a synonym for "cheap" or "shoddy." Vinyl seats were developed for those wanting but, unable to afford the real stuff or a vehicle with the "real' stuff. Just my not so humble opinion."
