Last night I was watching a documentary about the making of the latest mega expensive Bentley behemoth and the guy who is head of the trimming department was explaining the quality of the leather hides they use saying words to the effect of "we prefer bull hides because they have less flaws in them than female bull hides that have stretch marks from being pregnant"!!!

He then went on to show a concept car touted for the year 2035 and explained that with the growing trend of 'awareness', they would not be using bull hides but "vegan leather"!

I suppose one could say all leather is vegan as they are the hides of herbivores though I suspect he meant vinyl.

Regards,

Jay.

Leather is a garbage material. There are much better options for high abrasion areas like a car seat.. unless you plan on wearing a velour tracksuit every time you drive.

"Leather is a garbage material."

Well that's a strange statement to make. How on earth is leather 'garbage'?

Mankind has been making use of leather from the year dot.....and for very good reason.

Jay.

Leather is a byproduct of the meat industry: an application of the 'waste not(thing)' principle. It's 'garbage' because it'd be thrown away were it not that it can be useful for making certain items. In places where there are no tanneries it IS thrown away.

Vegan leather is just a synthetic, plastic phantastic material made to appeal to environuts. I will not touch it, neither shall my half-moon knife.

Some is. Some is good quality material and NOT made from any type of vinyl or plastic at all.

but for car seats even a high quality durable woven fabric will outlast leather. Leather is used because it’s seen as “nice” and was an easily available product that people know and feel familiar. Much like a spoiled small child that will only eat chicken nuggets or macaroni and cheese.

Who mentioned anything about “outlast”?
Leather is just much nicer.
Thinking it’s a garbage byproduct of animal butchering is terribly narrow minded.

What makes it “nicer”?
Your societal view of it as a product.

thinking of it as better than something else because it’s “nicer” (which is an infantile manor of description) is nearly the most incredible display of being small minded ever put into text.

"Thinking it’s a garbage byproduct of animal butchering is terribly narrow minded."

And historically incorrect. It was never a by-product to the hunters of times past, they needed the hides just as much as they needed the meat, the sinews, the bones etc!

"which is an infantile manor of description"

Which is an infantile way of using grammar and of spelling manner!

Regards,

Jay.?

I guess we can go back to brushing our teeth with sticks and drying fish on tree branches as well.

Thankfully, we don’t live in “times past”.

Using an iPhone has its disadvantages. Spelling correction being one.

but to compare today’s needs or culture to subsistence or even medieval culture is a fallacious argument at best.

you’re good at digging but not really at arguments, are you?

With the very large exception of herbivores, in nature animals are killing each other for something to eat and only the do-gooders think we're wrong for doing it. I just wonder if that is anything they won't bitch about.
Go outside and catch an animal with your bare hands or teeth and I have no problem with you eating it. If you can’t? Why not? We’re meant to eat them apparently, rather than something engineered by us to feed. So use your physical traits to eat it. You must have huge canines and incisors to tear at the flesh, right? Where are they? I’m sure you are very fast as well to run them down.
