After smoking P.A. and IRC's Va. flake all morning I switched to a bowl of aged McClelland's 2015 Vaper. Tart, lemony citrus tang all the way down; but despite the nice smoke volume the blend tasted rather thin, and completely fizzles out near the bottom of the bowl. Too, this must be a nicotine free blend. Go figure.

Here is a topic that I would like to see discussed:

Its about how to know which tobacco to smoke?

Here's the situation - You smoke one kind of tobacco and hmmm...I think I will light up ...(fill in your blend). You light up your pipe - take a few puffs and I can't taste a "damn thing!"
Here is some of the culprits I have discovered:

1. Tired pipe - you're too lazy to clean and you load your old favorite pipe too many times and you haven't let it rest - Foggedaboutit! It just smells and tastes like tired pipe

2. You're smoking Latakia blends and suddenly you go to a a VAPer - Foggedaboutit! You're taste buds are blunted.

3. You smoke a tobacco blend that has cigar leaf or worse smoke a cigar and then try to smoke your fave blend - Foggedaboutit! See above.

4. You taste a mass produced blend that has a touch of preservative in and Foggedaboutit! See above.
Anybody else got any feedback on this?

Exactamundo Max. I have been smoking a pipe for over 20 years and I still have days ways when I light up my pipe (I do have more than 1) and for some reason the blend I have selected just tastes...well...crappy or the little subtle flavors I had enjoyed previously in a bowl - just aren't there.
I was just wondering if other pipe smokers have discovered foods, tobaccos, etc.,etc, that change one's palate.

P.A. for a morning kick-start, then McClelland's 5100: Va. Red Cake in a ¼-bent GBD pot.
Responding to clanobucklin's "how to know which tobacco to smoke," I find that hearty Burley-based blends work after a meal; delicate and/or complex Va. and Oriental blends work on an empty stomach or at least a clear palate. I don't smoke Latakia any more, so I can't say how it fits.
A tougher problem: what kind of cheese-drink-tobacco combinations work well? Latakia and sharp cheddar, anyone?

A Saturday at home, started the day with some RLP6 in a Kaywoodie fullbent biliard I got from ebay. Next some P.A. in a Carey apple, then on to some english blends, looks like I have a full day ahead. There is a tin of McCellands mixture No. 12 calling my name right now, I guess I will grab a Kaywoodie bulldog get to it. happy smokes everyone

Phil, Lol, Shortcut to Mushrooms is pretty tasty so far. I say so far because I have only smoked 1 bowl of it. It is a lightly aromatic English blend from Just for Him's Middle Earth Pipeweed Series. You can get it here:

Clano, You make some good points about how sometimes your favorite blends just don't hit the mark.
Max, LMAO about the sardines and crackers!
