Then click on the "action alert" and follow the easy instructions. Takes 3 minutes to complete, and then you will almost immediately received a "canned response" from congress, thanking you for your opinion. So far, a little over 45,000 petitions have been sent, which is disappointingly low considering how many people in America enjoy fine tobacco. Save our current blends! Act now!!!

Just took care of it and opted for the printed letters rather than email as I seriously doubt any of these morons will bother with reading email. C'mon people... take a few seconds out of your life and do it.

FYI, the cigarrights.org only references protecting the "cigar industry" and makes no mention of pipe tobacco. You can edit your letter that you are sending either via email or print to include that.
Here is another resource: http://www.ipcprlegislative.org/take-action/
Sad, if you search for "Pipe Tobacco Petition" on the web, the only thing that comes up is old references to the SCHIP act and the pipe tobacco tax.

Amazing... both of these are all geared toward cigars. Where is the lobbying and representation of the pipe tobacco community in any of this????
The IPCPR is supposed to represent cigar and pipe retailers, but both of their suggested bills doesn't mention pipe tobacco once.
The complacency is amazing.

The sad thing is, 99% of consumers who enjoy premium tobacco don't even realize the industry is on the verge of collapse. They will only realize this once they walk into their local B&M and all there is to choose from are Romeos and a few Dunhill tins at 30 bucks a pop.
Get off your ass and do something, or get off the bus!

Big Tobacco applauds your apathy.

Apathy? As if writing up a half-witted "what if" of a post on a forum where only we pipe guys will see it is going to get anything done? And, by "Big Tobacco" you mean Big Cigarette which is driving this whole thing and threw us under the bus?..
And, no, no congressman is going to read every letter. They have people who do that, and basically make a check mark. Email works just the same as a letter.
This whole thread reminds me of the performance of Shelly Duvall in the Shinning, where she screamed throughout 90% of the movie.

Follow the link above and actually communicate with those who matter. Be Jack, not Shelly!

I am a "Jack" in a community of Shellys. I donate to the CRA and write letters to congress, and in three years when I load my pipe and have the daunting task of choosing between Carter Hall and Middleton's Cherry, I will shake my head and at least know I tried. Thanks, Obama.

The Cigar industry is the only one willing to put up $$ to fight. None of the pipe manufacturers are making the type of dough the cigar guys are, and the industry is declining while cigars and vape have been booming.

True... But there are many like myself who actively enjoy both pipes and cigars. I believe the actions of the CRA will benefit both groups, especially if the appeal to congress changes the predicate date from 2007 to 2016.

Paul Creasy of Sutliff has been fighting on our behalf. I just hope his fight is tougher than his fruity flavored products. ha ha. I wouldn't fret over not having pipe tobacco on any of the IPCPR stuff. Pipe smokers aren't nearly as scary as a room full of guys with $12 sticks in their jaws. Pipe guys tend to be thinkers, while cigar guys tend to be the ones you turn to get money collected, legs broken, and jaws snapped.
Yeh, honestly, the government could care less about a handful (relatively speaking) of pipe smokers. This was not big government. If you've been following the radioshow for the last few years, you'd know this was Big Cigarette and ALL Big Cigarette. They threw the gasoline on us, and they flipped their Bic and set us on fire. This is why I punch cigarette smokers in the face as they walk by, giving tons of money to the evil empire.

EDIT: fixed my posting problem. Seems a "less than" symbol caused it to truncate.

The sad fact of life is the majority of Congressmen/women really don't listen to the average Joe or Jill. They listen to their big money contributors. Yeah, they may tally responses to a given subject, but even that is of little value until the numbers reach significant size. That's one area where we fall short: less than 1% of the populace smoke pipes and less than 4% smoke cigars. Combined, that's only less than 5% of the populace. The anti-smoking groups, who lump all tobacco products together, easily number 4 to 8 times that. Their “tick marks” greatly our number ours.
Then there is the reality that many (most?) Congressmen/women seldom change their views on such subjects (sans big bags of money). Here, in Oregon, for example, most of our representatives are elected and supported by the liberal/progressives in the metropolitan areas in the north. They are firmly embedded in the “nanny state” camp and will not listen to opposing opinions. “They” know what’s good for us.
It’s a bleak view, at least from my saddle.
That being said, I still send the emails and sign the petitions. To do nothing is to give up and let “them” win. I will not do that. That is not the American way.

I still get a kick out of thinking back to when SCHIP passed and the massive tax increase was proposed on RYO, cigars and pipe tobacco. I remember people defending the RYO industry for changing their packaging to call it "pipe tobacco" to avoid the tax. "They are just trying to survive" people said. And some of the cigarette companies changing their cigarettes to "mini cigars", same story.
Those changes, those attempts to skirt the rules, as well as big tobaccos dislike for the competition in the industry, is part of what lead to pipe tobacco and cigars being lumped in with everything else.
Anyone want to defend them now?
Hey, at least we are all in the same sinking boat together, right?
