I have so many books (nearly a thousand) that a comprehensive list would be difficult. I would have to say that "Dune" tops my list and comes to mind at the forefront. Frank Herbert had a smooth yet cryptic writing style that made people think. His ability to combine politics, religion, science, and ecology in an entertaining fashion is considerable. The original book was writing in the early sixties and, considering what's happening in the world today, one could say the book is scarily prophetic.
I'm also a huge Stephen King fan, eagerly awaiting "The Shining" sequel.

The past 3 years I've turned into a bookworm, hitting the Library every week. But now I'm getting tired of reading. :|
Been reading lots of Near Death Experience, Reincarnation, etc. type of books.

I got that way when reading Templar history books. One year I got a bug up my ass about Templar lore and devoured books by the lot. Now, when something Templar related comes on TV, I grunt and roll my eyes.

I've done a little reading into the templars as well, interesting group. I totally agree with watching anything about them on TV is pretty much worth an eye roll and a channel change. I do have to say they make excellent antagonists in the Assassin's Creed series though.

I read mostly non-fiction...currently reading Underworld by Graham Hancock (I'd highly recommend all of his books):

As for fiction, most worthy of mention imo would be the works of Fyodor Dostoevsky, especially his masterpiece The Brothers Karamazov. I'd highly recommend the translations by Pevear and Volokhonsky for all of his books.
Also love Philip K. Dick's novels...notably Valis and The Divine Invasion.

I used to read a quarter of a book or so an evening, but now I'm falling asleep after

a chapter or two. But here are my favorites:
Any western by Louis L'Amour or Zane Grey

Any and all by J.R.R. Tolkien

Any and all by Stephen Hawking, Arther C. Clark or Carl Sagan

Anything by Edgar Allan Poe, H.G. Wells, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Jules Verne or Robert E. Howard (almost... could never

get into Tarzan)

Any Tom Clancy or W.E.B. Griffin (Griffin's Marine series is great!)

Any Oscar Wilde, Mark Twain or Lewis Gizzard
Great thred Lawrence

I tend to stay away from fiction except horror books, I usually read true accounts of WW2 and Vietnam war. I also like food history, I've read Salt and Cod by Kurlansky (sp)

If its a non fiction topic that intrigues me, then

I'll read it.

Y'all have some fine taste. One great author that I didn't see mentioned was Terry Pratchett. I think Nation was his best yet.
I was reading almost before I could talk, and I always have a couple of books going. The Wife makes me look like an illiterate. We probably have a thousand books between us. I have more books on my Kindle than I will ever be able to read, but some of my favorites are
Tom Clancy

Stephen King

Neil Gaiman

Clive Cussler

John Grisham

Kurt Vonnegut
I have devoured every book on Stonewall Jackson and anything I could get on The War of Northern Aggression. Anything and everything on fighter pilots of both World Wars. Turtledove and his alternate histories. Horatio Hornblower and Honor Harrington. Machiavelli, Sun Tzu, Lao Tze, C.S. Lewis.
God, I love books!

On King, I saw this earlier in the week:

Stephen King announced today that a sequel to his bestselling novel The Shining will be released on September 24, 2013. King previewed a portion of the book, titled “Doctor Sleep” during a reading at George Mason University last year (video below), and revealed that the novel will follow Danny Torrence, into adulthood.
Thanks for that al..I'll be checking that one out too..I have a small collection, had a pretty good one but several of the books were ruined/rained on in our move, so I'm trying to rebuild that.

I won't read anything with violence of any form. Why people are obsessed with the subject of killing other people, I'll never understand
Most of my reading the past two months has been on rational thinking and elimination of the brainwashing I received in my youth.. I am now liberated

Photoman13 - I know have done or (are still doing? ) the show; thanks for reminding me I might be able to order a tv series DVD.
Zanthal - Odd Thomas have been my read from Dean, I plan to add more his works to my list. Dean also is an infrequent but very good guest on Coast to Coast AM . Heck the show is just plain good to smoke a pipe to. Hobie1dog some of the guests interviewed are right up your alley.
Flyfishn - Absolutely, there was so much going on in that genre at the time they were released. A very good year of reading indeed.

Legend of the Seeker only had two seasons. It is one of those shows that I've been meaning to watch, and one of those series I've been meaning to read. After reading all of Wheel of Time and Song of Ice and Fire I have wanted to step back from the fantasy a little. It is on the list though.

SJ - have you read this?
Torpedo Junction by Homer Hickam
He's a former rocket scientist turned author. You wouldn't think a rocket scientist could be a great writer, but he really is - I've read several of his books and he knows how to tell a story. If you like WWII stuff, you won't be able to put this one down.
