The gentlemen who sold me my first pipe (Tinderbox in Middletown, NY) always smoked a Peterson Donegal Rocky Spigot. This pipe brought back that fond memory.

The rusticated looks like something a beaver with emotional issues and a bad dental plan would do.

I read somewhere that it is supposed to emulate a pine cone ... for whatever that's worth ...

I miss Tinderbox terribly, we had a great one
when I was in New Orleans in the 80’s and here in Richmond as well.

I like the one I have because it has both smooth and rusticated (I think it’s rusticated but may be sandblast?)

Have a number of recent rusticated Petes. Sure, the rustication doesn't hold a candle to the rustication on my '89 Deerstalker, but I don't think it's that bad.

When done right, Peterson sandblast is a beautiful thing. But, not very easy to come by. There are a lot of sandblasted Peterson, but very few catches my eyes. Their terracotta finish is nice, and I used to see good amount of SH with nice grains. Not sure how they are now. Rusticated finish is about same from pipe to pipe. Some likes them if you are into them. They are not bad. It just that one pipe doesn't stand out from the rest.

I was surprised how much I liked the hand feel of my rusticated 313. The chunky rustication has a nice tactile feel, and feels substantial.

I have a sandblast too that has a different hand feel.

You can’t go wrong but my “wow” factor on first pick up was significantly higher with the rustication. YMMV

I rarely clench so I tend toward blasted and rusticated pipes because I like the feel in my hand. There are some great Peterson sandblasts on inexpensive pipes. For example, here's a blasted Arklow 129:

None of those are in the SH line though.

Their rusticated derry line is GLORIOUS i think. I only have one but planning to get more. I love their chopped and scooped rustication and it looks so good with the outer vs inner stains they use on that line.

It looks like Peterson is at least experimenting with their rustication. The pipe below is available on SP as I write. One similar, but with the rustication looking a bit like a corn cob (short horizontal lines) is winding its way to me.

It’s an XL26. The hallmark appears to be 2003 and that’s around the time I bought it from the Wharf in Dayton Ohio.
