I never got into Calvin and Hobbes but I recognize it for having a place in american pop culture.
the Far Side is great, yes I have to say in retrospect I enjoyed it the most.
Dilbert has split my sides a thousand times too.
And that one is pretty funny too spartan

If we don't count strips I still love the Tintin books. I've been re-reading them on my iPad. Lots of pipe smoking too (and not just the captain).

Footrot Flats - an hilarious New Zealand strip about a farmer, his dawg and his sheep (and we all know the joke about the NZ men wearing rubber boots & their sheep)

I'm with the Dilbert fans.. Calvin & Hobbes pretty good too. In Europe, Hagar just always makes me smile.
Real comics: Tintin (Duh !) anything by a European artist names Hermann (Jeremiah, Comanche, ..), Yves Swolfs (Durango) or Giraud (Blueberry, XIII,...). But I think one would qualify those more as "Graphic Novels".

Without question, Gary Larsen's, The Far Side.

It's how one of my dogs, Ginger got her name.

Back when I read the comics, I would have to say Blondie was always funny for me. Always late and screwing up.

Calvin and Hobbes ALL THE WAY!! I also have the entire collection.... ahhhh, brings me backs to my childhood. When there were Scholastic book fairs at school, my parents always wanted me to get 'real' books, but I always ended up walking out with a new Calvin and Hobbes book instead :)

I used to enjoy them all.

Online comics are good. The Oatmeal comes to mind. However, since I know that there are some D & D fans on this site, I would be remiss if I didn't mention The Order of the Stick.
Not nearly so close to my heart as Calvin and Hobbes, but I have read every one of the 840 OOTS strips.

The Far Side, Calvin and Hobbes and Bloom County are my favorites also. One of my favorite childhood memories was reading the color Sunday Comics while eating a bowl of cereal at the big table in our kitchen. In one drunken night of debauchery in college I was dared, and even considered, getting a tattoo on my shoulder of Bill the Cat sprawled out in his underwear. Thank God I didn't.
