Cheers, chap. Not too keen on You Tube, badverts and waffling and stuff. I'm more of a wordy type bloke. Hence my joining. I haven't really looked at the different bits of this site yet. Bit busy today. I will indeed Introduce myself, though. If that's the done thing. Thanks for the advice. Appreciate it.

Welcome, your gonna wanna rub that flake out. Ball it up and rub it between your hands until it looks like cigarette tobacco. That's a mighty strong flake to start out with...
Ha! I shall follow your Instructions. Thanks. No too technical, after all. Re., strong flake. I wanted to start as I meant to go on. With some decent stuff. My almost sixty-year-old trap and lungs are rather hardy. Boar's Head tobacco in my early teens etc. I didn't like the sound of 'ready rubbed', to be honest. A bit second hand... Thanks for the sound advice.

I have a new Falcon pipe. It has a rustic dark billiard bowl. My first tobacco is Kendal Dark Flake. Flake tobacco. Folding, rubbing etc. Ha! It's all Greek to me, I'm afraid. I'd be grateful for some advice on how to go about things. My pipe lighter should be arriving tomorrow. So today I seek information.
Welcome aboard! Flake tobaccos can be intimidating at first, but then so can anything else. And, just like languages, it gets easier the more time you spend speaking it.

For starters, I'd just rub the flake apart in your hands. End result you're looking for is the flake broken down into as many individual ribbons as you reasonably can. If you have to ask, you're probably good enough.

After that, load it up. Sprinkle it in the bowl until full. Then give it a couple gentle taps on the side to settle it. Top it off and give it one more round of gentle taps. There should be a little bit rounded above the top of the bowl. GENTLY press that down until its even with the bowl.

At this point, you'll want to test the draw. You should feel breathing through the pipe, but not uncomfortably so. Noticeable, but in the background.

As far as lighting goes, if you can light a birthday candle with it without hurting the candle, it'll work. You absolutely do not need a specialty lighter. I use a cheap disposable Bic 90% of the time with no ill effects. While I'm here, you absolutely don't need a tamper. You need something to tamp with, sure. But a roofing nail, golf tee, shell casing, finger, or even stick you found on the ground can all tamp very well. Those gorgeous lighters and tampers are beautiful, I won't lie. And there is nothing like the snap of a Zippo or ping of a Nimrod, just like there's nothing quite like riding a perfectly tuned Ducati on the track. But that is no knock on my old beat up Yamaha SV.

As you get time, check out the stickied threads in the Tobacco Discussion sub. Those threads will answer questions you didn't know you had.

I could never figure out all the nuances of flakes, ribbons, shag, crimp, blah, just food processor it for a second or two. Smokes like a dream. :)

Thanks for the hyper-comprehensive answer, chief. My 'Promise' pipe lighter has just arrived. Bought on eBay. Delivered by Amazon Prime? I just want to do things right; hence the Falcon. A new bowl for each new tobacco. I have Falcon Pipe Spray and dry rings. A pouch. Full kit kaboodle and the kitchen sink, no less. I must say that I am rather puzzled by what 'plugs' might be. I have the information re., 'caking' the bowl. Read about 'the gravity method' of filling it up. Charring etc. Ha! I assume that thick people are unable to smoke pipes... Thanks again for the information.

Welcome to the forum.

I'm quite fond of Falcon pipes and use mine often. I also smoke flake tobaccos often and tend to do a messy fold and stuff that works for me.

Find out how much flake fits into your bowl. You don't want it to be too snug and you don't want to cram it in there. Just slide it in. Anything that sticks out gets trimmed. Take the trimmed material and bunch it up to make a tinder pile on top to easily light the flake. Should be about a pinch of tobacco.

Welcome! You can't go wrong with a Falcon. I have north of 250 pipes and still reach for my Falcons about 50% of the time.

I assume you're in the UK. Many of the online tobacconists here (or the physical ones) will sell little 15g pouches of most things. Worth picking up a variety and trying a number of things. Kendal Dark Flake is an interesting first choice, you may well love it!

There really is no right or wrong way to smoke a pipe.

Btw I'm a big heavy guy and most pipe chambers fit my fingers. If not, I use a tamper.

A 'messy fold' must be (phew!) yet another pipester technical term. I'll look into it after I've tried the 'just scrunch it up in your hand until it looks like rolling tobacco' bit of advice that I've had on here. Cheers for boggling my already boggled mind further, mate...

I am indeed in Northampton, England. Tomorrow is 'Pipe Day'; according to what I've written on my calendar. I am looking forward to it. When I opened the 50g Kendal Dark Flake pack. I thought, well, oh dear. What the devil do I do with this? Luckily, every helpful pipe smoker in the world seems to be on this site. I have advice coming out of my ears... Falcon: The clean, cool one. Top stuff!

I'd recommend giving Blakemar Briars a look! They're based in Northamptonshire.

You'll get so much advice on here, and it can be really confusing, even if it's great advice. Nothing beats just smoking and getting a feel for it.

Rubbing flake is very easy. Just don't try and rub too much at a time. If I've bought loose flake I put it into a leather pouch and flake what I need onto the open flap. If it's in a tin I rub it onto the lid. I don't try and rub it straight into the pipe.
A single 4" slice of flake from a tin is easy to rub out between thumb and fingers. If it's longer loose stuff just tear a length in half and rub out piece by piece what you need to fill the pipe.

You won't get this next problem with your Falcon but if (when..) you start buying other pipes, once the bowl is packed it can pay to rod the smoke hole with the pick on your knife to make sure there isn't a strand of tobacco stuck in it. If there is you'll suck it in further as you smoke and the pipe might start to wheeze and rattle. It's not a good idea to pull the stem from the bowl once the pipe is hot, so while you're getting the hang of packing make sure the hole is clear before you light up.
