Hello and welcome from West Virginia, USA. I understand that New Zealand is beautiful. A trip to me is the back yard, because I don't like to travel, but if I did I might at one time been persuaded to visit New Zealand. This is a great forum with a wonderful bunch of guys and gals with a lot of knowledge. Enjoy!

G'day Adam and welcome from Oz.

"Here for a short time"? Well here's the good news; a U.S. Surgeon Generals report from back in the day, found that pipe smokers who inhale, have the same life expectancy as a non-smoker.

Tobacco is not the demonic weed that the rabidly vocal anti-smoking brigade would have one believe.
Pipe tobacco has no nasty added chemicals.
Tailor made cigarettes have a staggering 300 to 600 added chems [some of which I'm convinced are more addictive than the nicotine]

Pipe smokers who do not inhale, have a life expectancy three years beyond that of a non-smoker.
This is due to the meditative nature of puffing on a pipe [and the fact that generally speaking, those who don't inhale tend to smoke one or two bowls a day]

Switching to a pipe from a serious 35+ year cigarette addiction has brought so many benefits.
I quickly lost my smokers cough.
No longer do I crave a smoke and can go all day without a puff when otherwise occupied, no problem.

My only regret is that I did not stick with a pipe when I picked one up for a few months when I was 15yo.
not entirely spot on. With health effects it seems like from all the studies and such put together it seems like the people who smoke pipes without many breaks are about on par healthwise with the people that smoke five or less cigs a day. There isn't any we figured it out as to why pipe smokers live a bit longer. There is a strong suspicion that it's what you said. There is also one that we're in general a little healthier in other life style choices then the average person. More likely to be active. Less likely to be poor and not have access to health care. Or in other words no one is certain why it's that way. Either way you got the important bit right, which is that you really don't have any reason to worry about pipe smoking effecting ones well being.
I don't think the stuff they add to cigs is more addictive then nicotine, but I do know they add stuff that they add changes how the nicotine is metabolized and that makes it more addicting. Though my favorite was when taking pathology classes there was an aggressive and rare type of pancreatic cancer that cigarette smokers and people who made a certain industrial solvent got.... I looked up if that solvent was something they added to cigs and it certainly was.
So the long and short smoke your pipes and don't worry about it. Something else will probably kill you.
P.s. I just like nerding out on these things.

Welcome! Railroading and pipes seem like a good match. My grandfather worked 49 years on the railroad. Started when steam was still the primary mover and finished on diesel electrics. Look forward to seeing your posts.

Welcome from Nashville Tennessee. I was in NZ in January 2020 right before the plague went global. I ate some great food, drank some great wine, met some amazing people, hung out in the shire and saw glowing worms. When I go back and look at my pictures I'm still blown away by the sheer beauty of the place.

@chopper Well done for giving up the ciggies; I've still got a smokers cough from smoking a clay pipe (plus the occasional cigarette / cigar)... Need to kick the ciggies though!
