Don't start with politics. It's not permitted in this forum.
All of life is politics.

My take:
Yes , taxes are confiscatory. Yes they are needed to run society. No, they are never fair, reasonable or euqitable. Yes, you are wasting time complaing here. Nothing will change just because you kvetched about it on PipesMagazine. Zilch.

Yeah life really is. I just got a settlement from the NYC public transit for loss of limb. The bureaucracy and court time was horrendous but I stuck with it. Now I live more north in a small hamlet.

If you want to continue a luxury hobby then you'll pay the price and accept the consequences. Excise tax is used as a deterrent to activities.
True, but let’s be real, the only thing excise tax has deterred me from is being able to afford a yacht to go with my pipe collection. Now, I just have to settle for sailing the 7 seas with captain black in my imagination. Guess that’s the price of luxury… and sanity.

I don’t pay this silly tax…..yet. I don’t live in a state with it enforced and as I said above, I have other addresses to send it to. 😊

Part of me thinks it sucks but a much larger part is happy MI moved away from "report it yourself or we will catch you, maybe, and charge you thousands." Everyone in my pipe club knows of someone who got caught.

Now I never bought tobacco in that time period, but I'm glad the temptation isn't there for me now.

IDK about anyone else but this new tax (WRONG!) they put on all my online orders just plain sux. I am not fortunate enough right now to be able to order huge quantities in 1 order. I order smaller amounts more often. It's bad enough to pay the shipping multiple times a year but more understandable than this flippin new tax they've added. Basically I gotta kick up a pound of tobacco every order to get my usual. That may not sound like a lot to some. But it's causing me issues all across the board. Sorry to be complaining but this is wrong man. View attachment 376790
There's nothing new about excise taxes on tobacco purchases. What is new, sort of, is paying taxes on purchases made online. When the issue of paying taxes for online purchases came before SCOTUS, they supported it as an act of fairness to brick and mortars and small businesses who are obligated to collect sales taxes from their customers. We started paying sales taxes on line. It was only a matter of time before the excise taxes on various goods also began being collected online, since brick and mortar and small businesses have been obliged to pay those taxes when they bought stock for their stores, passing that cost along to the consumer.

The complaints about this tend to verify my conclusions regarding the basis of all human conflict, and it is this:

People are loath to give up an unearned advantage.

True, and it’s even harder when they’ve grown accustomed to having the upper hand without lifting a finger. Guess you could say it’s a case of ‘free lunch syndrome’—once you’ve tasted the perks, it’s tough to go back to cooking your own meals!
