Governments of every description at every level have always worked for the benefit of an elite group. If you're doing well, it's partly because someone higher than you on the food chain benefits from that.
As long as there's a clear benefit to allowing vice, it will be tolerated, if not encouraged. When that benefit is no longer perceived to exist, death by a thousand cuts is the preferred way of eliminating it.

This falls in the "it's a small world" category. In the early '90s I got a notion I would like to move to the Pacific northwest. If I did my intention was to start or buy a pipe/cigar store. After some research I found one that looked promising in Spokane, Washington. It seemed like a pretty good deal so I did some checking and found that the tobacco taxes in Washington were sky high... Think I'll pass. Then I had a thought; what about Utah? Coeur d'Alene was just a few miles over the Washington state line. Put a store there and you could draw customers from Spokane. (and besides I found a street in a beautiful neighborhood named for one of my ancestors... cool!) Coeur d'Alene looked like a great place to live so I checked it out. You guessed it; just like Washington, sky high tobacco taxes. I never did make that move, stayed home and started a store here.

I thought tobacco in general was expensive here. 15 euros for a 50 gram tin/pouch, 30+ euros for a 100 gram tin.
The argument "but it brings tax money into the drawer" is a contradiction in terminus, people having problems from smoking and the treatment they deserve exceeds that amount easily. Smoking will always cost society more than it will bring in tax money. Research you can take with a grain of salt, but researchers say smoking costs society in The Netherlands about 33 billion (yes, Billion) euros a year where there are 3.2 billion on duties collected in 2020, in the year 2000 this was only 1.6 billion, so double the duties in 10 years.
Pipe and to a certain degree cigar smoking isn't the root cause of these health problems and the pricetag to society in general (compare it to the elephant crushing the mouse that has a flea on it, refering to one the latest pipe shows), but well have to take the tax hike with the ones who cause the root problems else it wouldn't be "fair".

I live in Idaho! An old saying around here is “eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow you might be in Utah“. I guess I’ll have to add buy some good tobacco too.
Utah Idaho what's the difference. They're both states they both have dirt and people. Basically aside from all the details they're identical. Just like China and Mars. Both have dirt both are somewhere in the solar system.Oops!

how much are you drinking? I mean really I've never been so drunk I thought I'll probably wake up in Jersey.
The “just of the saying” is that enjoy life here in Idaho (or most anywhere out west) because tomorrow you could go to Utah where there is quasi tyrannical control of all things alcohol, entertainment and as I recently learned - tobacco. I ascribe to all things in moderation. It has nothing to do with drinking to excess and not knowing where you are.
Well, I have issue with that comparison. Have you ever been west of the Mississippi? And if you haven’t been to Utah or Idaho then I would guess that your comments are based off of some stereotypical reference to the wonderful Pacific Northwest and the states there in.
It appears you live somewhere in Massachusetts area? I’m sure you would not appreciate someone comparing your “wonderful state“ to another state which really has nothing in common besides having “dirt” and “people”. Each state is unique in and of itself. The devils in the details lad.
Ha Ha ...You got it right..idaho and Utah is totally different thing...Very different states ,people, opinions,laws etc...and what matters the most is how I feel in idaho and how I feel in UTah...My buddy living here lot longer than me told me -man it is never a good thing to leave idaho for too long...And there is about 100 reasons for it....
I was raised Mormon. The people can be great toward acquaintances and coworkers.
