After much reading and studying, I cleaned the pipe with 91% alcohol and let dry. I then applied a very thin coat of Elmer's Stainable wood filler to those areas that would get extremely hot and let dry (my tube was very dry filler so I added a drop of water to make it easier to spread). The next morning I applied a second thin coat to those areas where the filler had absorbed into the pipe. I then sanded it with a 8K/10K/12K jeweler's buff stick and restained it. Then waxed it. I smoked a bowl of Lane 1-Q a little faster and hotter than slow sipping. The pipe got as warm as my other pipes but not hot. So clearly there were some microscopic cracks or lines that were emitting excessive heat. Its 90-95% better now and the pipe can be held without discomfort. In no way was the temperature of the tobacco or smoke effected.
It will now be in regular rotation (go to pipe) now that the heat issue is addressed.
I also filled a few tiny pits on a Peterson with a Minwax filler
on and they are barely noticeable now.
Two good products to have on hand for quickfixes.
