My deepest sympathies, didi. Been there quite a few times.
It's never easy to say goodbye to a beloved "family" member.
As we Greeks say when someone passes:
"May his memory be eternal."

Sorry for your loss. These are some websites that I and others have found helpful, hope they help:

Pet Loss Help - Mourning the Life of Best Friend

How Will I Know It's Time | In-Home Euthanasia (lapoflove.com)
When my 50kg beautiful Rotti boy was 12yo, I knew he was in his twilight years.
Just thinking of losing him would choke me up and many tears.
Then I handed it over to my Angel friends, asking them to take care of his passing when it was his time.
It was like a weight had been lifted and I gave it no more thought.

When he'd just reached 14yo, he wanted to be outside. I knew.
We were lying on the grass in the morning sun. I told him that I'd be okay, that we would reunite when it's my time, that I loved him always.
He gave my hand a lick. Put his head down and took his last breath.
It was so peaceful and I didn't shed a tear [though I'm all choked up just typing this]
My Angel friends were with me. 'All is well and as it should be'.

Rotti boy hung around me for a few months. A few visitors could see a big dark shadow laying alongside me.
Over the next fifteen years he visits me occasionally, in the astral as I sleep.
He'll be there to welcome me home.

Nearly every day since I think of him with a smile. Never sadness.
What an absolute privilege it was to have had such a special boy in my life.

It's not ever goodbye but rather, until we meet again. Love is the bond.

Very well said! My dogs are now 8 years going on 9. I know the time is coming and I dread it something fierce. As a single, divorced father, my dogs have been my constant companions and have provided me untold comfort and joy during many difficult times. I truly can't bear to think of that day.

That was exactly the position that I was in. Rotti boy was there with me through the worst and loneliest time of my life.

One does not need to be religious to call on the Angels.
We are all Gods children. The Angels were created to serve and aid us.
But, they cannot go against our free will so one must give them permission and instructions.

Seriously, call on our Angel friends. Tell them your fears. Then hand that over to them and ask for peaceful passings when it's their time.
It is a request borne out of love. The highest of motives.
You will know when you've been answered because you will feel the weight lift.

We put our dog Kane down today. He was going to be 16. Had him since 2009. He loved hanging with me while I had my pipe.

RIP Kane.

He was the goodest boi.
Our oldest just turned 15, so sorry for your loss.

I'll ponder something appropriate and tomorrow devote a lunchtime bowl in his honor and in reflection on all the great dogs I've been lucky to know!
