So many of you have recommended Everclear for pipe cleaning that I decided to hit the Pa state store the other day and buy a bottle. I couldn't find it anywhere so I asked a clerk if they carried it. She told me that they did but that I needed a prescription for it.

Apparently, the state of Pennsylvania decided to save college kids from themselves and now requires a doctor's prescription for Everclear. It is available to pharmacists.

I'm imagining my conversation with my doctor asking him for a prescription for Everclear so I can clean my pipes. Him to me: A)grain alcohol will kill you, B) pipe smoking will kill you. Me to him:"Give me the presciption so I can clean my pipes or I will kill you."

This world gets more insane every day.

Lol, long way to go to get some Everclear.

My dad actually picked up a bottle for me, last time he visited. The stuff was priced about the same as regular hard stuff! I was really surprised! I figured it would be cheap, but no. 17 bucks, just like a fifth of Smirnoff or something else that doesn't just about blind you.

But it DOES work very well for cleaning pipes. And a fifth'll last forever if you don't...sample it. Ha.

Ridiculous laws in the US freak me out.
Tho some laws here are just as puzzling. You can no longer buy flavoured tobacco cigarillos because "they are a gateway for kids to start smoking"

But seriously, I do have a solution to this and a lot of the children propaganda that all of the anti's are throwing about; CHECK THEIR IDENTIFICATION!
If they are not old enough, then they can not buy. It is amazing how we already have laws in place to stop underage people from getting certain things, yet they want to implement more laws that are just stupid.
What the hell would you need grain alcohol for anyway to be able to get a prescription?

Bob, This isn't about underage drinking here. Its about controling behavior of adults. The legal age is 21, Everclear is legal alcohol; so what's the problem.

I'm going to look into this a bit deeper to see if it is a "contolled substance".

Everclear is all I use in my pipes to clean them and it works wonders. Have I sampled it some? Yep, and about fried some chest hairs in the process!
I'm in GA and haven't had any problems finding it. But then again, I also don't have any problems finding the 'shine 'round here either. (legal or not) :nana: Although, we still cannot buy sealed alcoholic beverages on Sundays from a retailer, but we can go to a restaurant or bar and buy it by the glass then drive home after consumption.

Another crazy law.

Here in Florida, you can only get the 151 proof Everclear.

I believe some states sell 190 proof or higher. I use 151 rum

and it works fine for both pipe cleaning and drinking.

You can't buy Everclear because someone had to pee on your tire.
Regarding laws,.....the problem is simple enough to understand, but will never be solved.
Society is made up of many types of individuals and or "groups" of people based on similar mind-sets, traits that have been a part of them since birth,...one of these groups of individuals has a need to help strangers in order to feel good about themselves; volunteers, rescue workers, etc, they make up a certain percentage of our society.

Another percentage lives to survive off the fruits of others labors, not unlike the "knights in shining armor", they've been like that since childhood.

There are also individuals who want to do nothing but enforce the rules on everyone, again; as police officers today they were the ones usually tried to enforce their will on others they're entire life.
Then there are the rule-makers,.....they're the ones you remember as kids who had to be the ones to make up and add to the rules of the new game you just came up with. They exist today as lawmakers. It matters NOT whether a new law is actually needed,....they just have this internal drive to make a rule for everyone to obey.
Why do you need an RX for a bottle of Everclear? For the same reason there over 2,000 redundant laws concerning gun control....because of the little dweebs who've been getting away with making rules all their lives, one felt the need to leave his or her mark.
Like a dog lifting it's leg on your tire.

I just finished my big bottle of Everclear and decided to switch to Bacardi 151 for cleaning my pipes.

(Sometimes I do a shot of it too.) :mrgreen:
