I had not cleaned it yet. It is now though. Moonshine in a retort is the best ghostbuster. Was just wandering which blend could leave the wonderful ghost that I was smelling. For some reason, I have found that Velvet is extremely close, but not exactly.

Rcstan- I gotcha. No complaints here, all the estates I've gotten from you guys are cleaned really well, the denatured alcohol thing just got me thinking.
I've read on the pipemakers forum where it is recommended to make shellac with denatured alcohol and I always wondered why not just 200 proof ethanol, which is essentially denatured alcohol w/out all the poisons added. Just some ponderings.
Happy smokes!

Narrowed the smell down to 3. Velvet, Prince Albert, and Carter Hall. Smoking Carter Hall in it right now, wonderful! :puffy:

Havering worked in a Chemical plant for over 30 yrs they Denature alcohol so you won't drink it. That being said I wouldn't clean the inside of my pipe with it. Stay away from Methanol , highly poisonous, high alcohol content booze, Everclear is ok. The reason for denatureing was people were drinking product and Taxes weren't paid on it, they weren't worried about your health. Remember I"m from the government and here to help you :

I don't know Velvet, but Prince Albert has a wonderful, old-timey smell. Those are likely candidates, considering how popular they once were.

Exactly. I wouldn't want a pipe cleaned with it, either. Glad that Smokingpipes is up front about using it.

Everclear, or whatever name your local store sells it by, is so inexpensive, easy to get, and non-toxic, why use anything else? Seriously. 191 proof rum is expensive. Rubbing alcohol smells nasty. Just get some everclear.

That was the thinking two years ago. Now folks are cottoning onto the benefits of hot water to clean their pipes, saving the harsher remedies for badly ghosted pipes.

Most tobacco blends leave some kind of scent, hopefully not a ghosting taste. Usually, I like that slight afterglow in a well maintained pipe where the scent is a subdued whiff of burnt tobacco.

Most of us are still using alcohol.

You would love the smell of my pipe and tobacco closet.

Most people were using horse and buggy for years after cars were available. Most people like MacD's. Most people.............
I am certain many will see that the marketing efforts from the 1890's through the 1960's warning folks to not use water..... [and buy and use their marvelous alcohol based sweeteners/cleaners instead]— is just a long hangover as a result of misinformation from the big makers. Er, maybe not.
