Well as usual I feel strongly both ways!!....However If one only bought New He would be limited on several purchases , Only eat at restaurants that throw away dishes after using once, Never buying a used Car , never buying other than a new house. Never buying a diamond everyone knows that after thousands of years probably some owned it before! never reading a newspaper that someone left somewhere , and the magazines at a docs waiting room ...Shudder!

I believe that a sound cleaning eliminates any residue (other than one left by Charlie sheen)to be null and void! BUT some think different and bless them . On the other hand I don't use someone else tooth brush or ussd tooth picks or dental floss , But estate pipes well I feel strongly , Guess which way?

The food I buy at an eating house is new in that it has not been previously masticated or expelled. I do not purchased the cutlery or the crockery. I have purchased a Civil War era sword and other antiques over the years. I simply have no interest in owning a used pipe. No interest in purchasing used tooth picks either. Although if I could locate one certified as being used by "Sad" Sam Jones I might be persuaded to own it. He was a favorite when I was a lad.
I do not purchase used newspapers, diamonds or magazines. I might if such were of historical interest.
I would also purchase an antique pipe if it was sufficiently certified as belonging to Samuel Clemens, Grant or some such. The pipe would have to be in the condition the owner left it after last use. It would not be cleaned nor smoked by me.

davet, brewshooter,
Yeah, I know it makes no sense. I do not (ever) put my mouth on either motorcycles or video games, I just like to buy them new.
In the case of games (really any software) I like the thought that the money is going to the creator or company that did the work, I suppose
In the case of bikes, I always worry that I'm going to buy somebody else's problem.
I buy a ton of used and antique books. I restore and resell old computers. I love old hand tools. I've bought a couple of cars used, but never bikes or software.
I would consider a '48 Panhead Springer, if the price was right!

Well after reading all the pro and cons of estate pipes I believe the main objections is they

have been in someones elses mouth and possibly a dead man!!!!!

Now that Idea is not very appealing thinking someone has had that pipe clenched in the teeth, shudder

BUT there is always a BUT, ( we all have one) I have visted 3 well known Pipe carvers thru out the years and It MAY come as a surprise and a shocker BUT there is that word again IN ALL 3 I observed that when they were doing their magic they would ALL occasionaly blow thru the pipe to expell any dust etc. from the pipe they were working on! Gadzooks these pipes, all tho NEW had been in someones mouth previously..... (PSST, they probably were not Cleaned as well as most estate pipes are)

so I guess If you want a pipe thst has never seen any lips except yours You probably should take up pipe making! BUT what about the raw briar it was probably dug up from a person wearing hospital gloves loaded upon a sweaty donkey and finally thrown upon a sanitized area that has a hospital like atmosphere!, RIGHT?

Used, gently used, previously owned, estate! They are theoretically equal, but connote different levels of specialness if you will. No worries about them being in the mouth of a deadman unless the undertaker was very weird.

There's an old saying, life is short but art is long. In other words art goes on indefinitely while artists and their audiences are mortal and last only a short time. Same is true of pipes. An 85-year-old pipe may just be getting started. They're like parrots. They outlive their people (owners, ha-ha) in most cases. That's why an old pipe may look appetizing to a world-wise pipe smoker despite its previous use.

There has been discussion, in other threads, about the benefit of urinating on briar during the aging process...
