Thank you!I love my Carey Magic Inch pipes. I think they work best just the way they were designed. No tape! Mine are light weight and easy to clench because of the nylon stem and don't oxidize like vulcanite. I smoked them exclusively when I was remodeling homes back east and worked outside. I also smoke Falcon Pipes often.
Welcome to the forum and don't listen to the naysayers.
Thank you! Where do you live?Hello and welcome back from London
Many thanks!Welcome back aboard from central North Carolina. I had an E.A. Carey pipe for a while, and I taped over the carburetor slots, since they didn't seem to add anything and I got a better draw with them covered. If you're thrifty about pipes, as I often am, look at Rossi pipes by Savinelli, new pipes by Kaywoodie, the Saxon line, and French Ropp pipes. The Rossi pipes are lower price than Savinelli, but have the same smoking characteristics, just a little less fancy with the finishes. In cobs, I spend a little more to get the acrylic stems on special series, still only about $26.
I think there is a distinction to be made regarding the word “filter”. Pipe smokers who don’t like filters will not try the Magic Inch system. However, the papyrate sleeve that you show in the picture simply absorbs condensation from the smoke. A pipe cleaner passes through completely and there is no reduction in draw. The “vents” in the stem allow a small amount of cooler air to increase the condensation and to cool the smoke. You probably already know this so I offer it to others reluctant to try a Carey. Happy smokes!I’m still a newbie!
Can this be seen by everybody ?
This is what a Carey filter looks like:

It’s good to have you on board!I'm in almost the same boat...trying to pick up where I left off.
Welcome from VirginiaI bought my first pipe nearly 50 years ago!
But I have not been a consistent smoker - sometimes smoking quite frequently, and sometimes not smoking for 6 months or a year. After a break of nearly a year, my new year’s resolution is to get into pipes again!
I found pipesmagazine and decided to join - only to find that I was already a member! But I had not been in touch for a long time and had forgotten about it … So I feel like a new member, even if I’m not!!
My favourite pipes are from E A Carey. The other day I read that it is better to put tape over the holes in the stem: any thoughts on that?
My favourite tobacco has been Mellow Virginia, but I was given a tin of Bankers from JJ Fox in London, which I am very much enjoying.
I am a church minister (semi-retired!), and I live near Dover on the south coast of England.
