For my personal English/Aro crossover blend I smoke a 50/50 mix of Lane HGL and PS Luxury English. I found this as recommendation from BlueCollarPipeSmoker on his YouTube channel a few years ago. I'm not saying it's better or worse than the many great recommendations above, just that it's the one I've settled on and enjoy quite a bit.
Thumbs up for the English Luxury. I haven’t met a Lane blend that I’ve liked so far.

Sutliff Eastfarthing. Latakia, vanilla. First half tastes a little cheap, second half melds beautifully and deliciously. I love crossovers and this is my favorite.

Resurrecting this thread in order to recommend two more Crossovers/Aro-Englishes which I've had since I last posted here:
  1. Boswell's "Military Force"
(there are light but noticeably sweet berry and chocolate toppings on this very fine, light English mixture)

  2. SPC Plum Pudding Bourbon Barrel Aged
(standard Plum Pudding has been a favorite for years, but I just tried the bourbon barrel aged version and, oh boy, the bourbon flavor is much stronger than I anticipated and makes this an altogether different blend)
I highly recommend both of these.

Thanks for the recommendations. How would you describe Military Force compared to Northwoods?

Thanks for the recommendations. How would you describe Military Force compared to Northwoods?
  1. To my taste, they seem equally high quality.
(Obviously, a person may enjoy one more than the other -- but both seem equally high quality.)

  2. Military Force is VA based (non-cavendish), whereas Northwoods is cavendish based.
As much as I love Northwoods (and I really do), I feel that I can take the tobacco in Military Force more "seriously" in some sense.

  3. Whereas Northwoods is topped with something like vanilla and church incense, Military Force goes a completely different direction with flavors of berry and chocolate. (This has not been confirmed by Boswell -- this is my own take on what I'm tasting. But I'm pretty sure now.)

  4. The flavors are a tad more difficult to identify in Military Force -- I had to think about it before I landed on berry and chocolate -- yet (counter-intuitively) they render Military Force a bit sweeter than Northwoods.
In other words, relative to Northwoods, Military Force's sweetness is a smidge more obvious, although its particular flavors aren't.
My overall impression of Military Force is that it's extremely harmonious. Every element is in play, and every element is in proper proportion. Few blends this sweet are this complex.

Thanks for the thorough response! I’ll definitely check it out in my next order.

I’ve heard good things about it but never bought any when it was available. Do you know why it was discontinued?
Seem to remember them saying that they couldn’t source the ingredients, or ?, or something. Either way it’s gone, but if I was into English Aromatics I’m sure I’d come across something just as good if not better. ?☕

Just For Him, who made Shortcut to Mushrooms (which was my favorite blend when I first started pipe smoking), still makes Whiskey Biscuit Gravy, which is extremely similar.
WBG is slightly sweeter than STM was, and has a tad less latakia than STM had, but it's noticeably similar to those of us who smoked both.

(I hadn't had WBG when this thread was started. I've since had it, and it reminds me strongly of STM, except for those two differences.)
