Encouraging New Pipe Smokers

So, a little over a week ago I had to get all four of my wisdom teeth pulled.

In the exam before the surgery, the surgeon asked if I smoked. I said, cigarettes and a pipe from time to time. He asked how I liked the pipe. I said quite a bit! He told me he smoked cigars. I told him one benefit I had heard of smoking pipes over cigars is that you aren't supposed to relight a cigar, but pipes can be set down for days at a time and smoked later.

Fast forward to my follow up after the surgery. I showed him this picture on my phone, told him the story of @Humblepipe giving me this pipe (which is still one of my favorites), and how great the piping community is. I said if this pipe doesn't get you to smoke a pipe I don't know what will!!


He seemed interested! Asked if it takes a filter, and if you just stuff the tobacco in there. I didn't complicate things for him. Just tried to nudge him to buy a pipe. I told him about Boswells and that there were plenty of cigar smokers, but that we need more pipe smokers! The nurses mentioned another surgeon/dentist that smoked a pipe and they all seemed to enjoy my enthusiasm

Anyway, been a while since I had posted and I think he just might go buy a pipe! Mission accomplished.

Dry sockets are horrible. Dont go pedal to the metal when you start again. You can still dislodge the blood clot.

I had cataract surgery recently and was advised to stop smoking for 3 weeks
Recovering for a cold just now, with a lingering cough. It has been ANOTHER difficult 3 weeks without a smoke.

I have a birthday coming up this week, so fingers crossed I will be enjoying a bowl or 3 on the day

It was/is tough.

I abstain from smoking at the first signs of a sore throat or sniffle these days.
Having to put up with chronic sinus issues + loss of taste&smell for 2 years and then going through a 4 hr sinus operation a few years ago taught me to err on the side of caution and NOT to aggravate health issues

My hygienist was appalled at the staining. I told her I drink lots of strong black coffee and tea. She earned her pay that day.

No worries! I can't imagine... I too err on the side of caution when I get sick with sore throats and stuff. Or, maybe that isn't the right phrase to use lol I just sometimes literally cannot smoke my throat is so sore. Why try to force it at that point? It's always tough, but sometimes a break is needed!

And, I hope I was at least able to get him to try a pipe! I forgot to mention it, but he also wanted to know how much a pipe cost. So, the signs seem good! Maybe he will actually give it a shot and that's one more person that can try to help keep this past time from dying out. I think anyone who smokes cigars and hasn't should give it a shot, personally!

I drink a ton of coffee, smoke cigarettes, clench pipes, and break off fishing line with my teeth. Dentists hate me lol I'm getting better with using nippers to cut my line at least

I go in for 4 cleanings a year and my hygenist knows about the pipe/cigar smoking. She takes some extra time with the sonic scrubber and it helps quite a bit to whiten these old suckers up.

I usually smoke a pipe straight through until complete. I've been setting down cigars until the next evening for a long time and it's just as good then as before.

The accumulated tars burn away. You can see the torch-like response until it all burns off.

Then the cigar tastes as fresh as when initially lit.

Well, I honestly don't think he would've gone out to buy a pipe after our first interaction He asked no further questions and seemed generally disinterested. But, after our second interaction when I asked if I could show him a picture and tell him a little story (ie; the pipe that @Humblepipe gifted me), it seemed to peak his interest! It is a beautiful pipe. So, I don't blame him!

I would say that I would certainly feel somewhat/partially responsible for him buying a pipe if he does go out to buy one. His first question (which I forgot to mention) after I showed him the picture in the OP was, "So, this is wood?" I don't think he had a clue at all about pipes and was likely just never exposed to it. Certainly, he never went out of his way on his own to learn more. I tried to show him the light!

During our first interaction, he did refute the relighting a cigar thing. He said that he doesn't mind relighting a cigar later or even the next day. I guess he cuts the end off and purges it. I don't know where I first heard this about cigars not being good to relight, but a quick google search certainly indicates that some out there definitely believe it ruins the taste! I'm no cigar smoker. So, I won't comment further.

On the contrary though, some here have actually recommend I intentionally stop smoking a pipe and wait until the next day or so to smoke the rest of it; claiming it improves or otherwise changes the flavor in potentially desirable ways. Delayed Satisfaction Technique or something or another??

FWIW, I almost never smoke a pipe straight through without a single break Not because I'm incapable. It's just that my pipes tend to last quite a long time and I'm generally "satisfied" after 30-45mins or so. So, I'll often (but not always) split it up into two sessions. Granted, I'm not normally waiting days or even over night. But, I'll regularly take extended breaks when smoking a pipe; especially when I'm working. Just whenever I get the itch again. I do try to always finish the pipe before I go to bed at the very latest. I don't particularly like the idea of leaving a pipe overnight.

If the tobacco isn't soggy, one can have fine relights after days, even weeks. YMMV.
