From C&D's description in Smoking Pipes:

Honoring historic US Burley growing regions, Cornell & Diehl's Small Batch: Eight State Burley showcases the often overlooked nuance and complexity of air-cured leaf, beginning with a specially sourced, matured blend of 2014 White and Dark Burleys — offering a mellow, creamy nuttiness, as well as a subtle, soft cocoa flavor on the palate. Top-tier Canadian Brights and SM2-18 Red Virginias (the same grade as in last year's run of Carolina Red Flake and Carolina Red Flake with Perique) complement those distinctive flavors with layers of sweetness, tang, and bready spice. Finally, Oriental tobaccos, well aged for 17 years, further contribute to the complexity of this unique Burley mixture: A blend of rare Sokhoum, Samsun, and Katerini sun-cured leaf from 2005 add a lightly floral, oily, spicy and tart flavor — their sweetness having deepened and their sour notes having muted with age.

The blended mixture is pressed, sliced, and tumbled into an old-fashioned "chop-block" or ready-rubbed cut for an elegant balance of easy preparation and optimized aging potential. Eight State Burley is perhaps the most elevated rendition of a Burley blend available on the market today: Handcrafted in South Carolina using specially sourced, rare varietals and components of the highest caliber, it evolves in depth and character from first light to final puff — offering a familiar, comforting, and nostalgic flavor that expands to challenge preconceptions and set the new standard for Burley blends across the board.

Interested in Mr. Inks review. But as far a Burley aging goes, not much has been written about super spectacular changes as it may be from Virginias.

Regardless, it's nice to see another release for those who missed it or are in love with it and want more!

Nice blend for sure and one that had me interested to explore more bur blends. ...still love HH Burley the best but it's different...and I love diversity and options!!

I really do, it's one of the few things I by from the secondary market. I'm probably stupid for doing so but I want to ensure I have some in the cellar for a little while. I currently have 22 tins in my collection.
Sun Bear is one of my all time favorites. I got 30 tins of the last release trying to get a lifetime supply put together (I don’t smoke it ALL the time?) I don’t think I’ll be going after and eight state.

Their description states that some of the leaf is more aged than the original recipe. So same but slightly different.

How?

It appears you copy/pasted the description from last years release. If they are using the same leaves, which is possible but does call into question the 'limited' nature of last year's blend, it would still only be the same age, no?

Again, like I said, I was being pedantic.

No. They are using older Burleys this year. In a video posted to C&D's FB page, Jeremy says the Burley leaves are from 2014 in this batch. I can't link the video here because of custom share settings on their FB page. I don't believe the video was posted to YouTube but I haven't looked either.

You get older every year right? One year later, you are one year older….

Alas, I'm committed the crime of not having Facebook. My apologies. But this is interesting.

Yes but if someone was born in the same year as me, one year later we'd still be the same age; by that line of thinking so did the leaves in the tin from last year's release. Because they were from the same year... But now that I know it's actually from a 3-year older batch, I see the difference.

Here are the full details on the batch from 2022:

To be fair, now that I'm looking over this tin from last year, I am making the leap from 'Small Batch' to 'Limited' I guess. A victim of over vigilance towards marketing, but I stand corrected. Thanks for sharing the video.

EDIT: Jeremy says in the video that the bright virginias are a 2019 instead of a 2017 batch (bigger deal) and the white burleys are from 2014 as opposed to 2015 (smaller deal). But knowing Jeremy's work over the years, I'd say the blend is probably going to taste very similar from last years. Still waiting for Jiminks to carve out the tablets of gospel though...

Tin age vs bale age are going to be very different paths. There was a prior discussion on the two CRF blends that used identical crops and recipes in back to back years but tasted notably different. The difference was attributed likely to being the baled stock spending an extra year in inventory even though they were from the exact same harvest.

Regardless, I am super stoked that C&D and a few others like Peretti's, WCC... are taking Burley seriously and doing more stuff with it other than "Filler" for Virginia and aromatic blends, etc.

Burley was the cornerstone of the American tobacco industry and deserves to be showcased as such. Besides, I LOVE Burley blends but not the strong ones.... Oxymoron perhaps? puffy
