It's good stuff. A nice, soft American style nutty burley-forward blend with a little sweet Virgina and a touch of Latakia for added depth. It has a light topping that reminds me of jammy red wine. Not really an aromatic, more of a Codger Burley that smokes great all day long. It's made by Sutliff and available at most any online retailer.

I smoke a bowl to start my day every day. Here's my review of the blend:

The smell from a freshly opened tub or tin is entrancing. The nutty, earthy, woody burley is a team player, and also has a touch of molasses as the lead component. The gold Virginia cavendish provides some grass, tart and tangy citrus and few drops of honey as a supporting player. The brown sugary unsweetened black cavendish is a condiment. The smoky, woody, earthy sweet Cyprian Latakia isn’t very detectable being only one percent of the blend, but it’s just enough to add nuance to the flavor. I also observe a little fruity plum as well as a red wine topping. There's also a couple pinches of cinnamon present. The strength level is a hair past the mild mark, while the taste is almost at the center of mild to medium. I’ve never experienced any bite, though I know a few people have. I puff it a little on the slow side for best effect, and I recommend that pace. Has no harshness or rough edges. Burns cool, clean and even at a reasonable rate, and has a slightly more than mild nic-kick to it. The taste is ver consistent from top to bottom, and leaves just a little dampness in the bowl. Requires few relights. Has a pleasant, short lived after taste, and room note. An all day mildly aromatic smoke.

This product has outlived Robinson (who supervised its creation) by many years, and has never been out of production. For those who remember him, it’s a trip down memory lane. For those who don’t know much about what a great actor Robinson was, it’s a chance to acquaint one’s self with a venerable blend and perhaps the man himself to some degree.

9-1-2013 Edit: The 1960s EGR was produced by the Greenfield & Winther company, who originated the blend. I was happy to discover the taste of the new blend is a virtual dead ringer for the old, except the newer was slightly sweeter with a honey note the original didn't have, though the aging process may have caused it to disappear. The spice note from the cinnamon was just a little more obvious in the older version, too.

I've been smoking this blend since the 1960s. It's always in my rotation.
Jim's description is spot-on. It is indeed a wonderful smoke.
And, I am grateful to Jim for championing this blend.
He has brought so many smokers to this blend over the years.
Thanks, again, Jim.
Hope you'll like it too, garageb08.

I bought my first tin BECAUSE of Jim. I then bought a tub because it's a great smoke!

Codger often goes hand in hand with cheap which this blend is not. The price is comparable to most any premium blend @ 10 bucks for 1.5 ounces or 44 bucks for 12.

Fun Fact: Smokingpipes.com attributes the revival of this blend to Jim Amash aka. Jiminks. It says so right in the description of the stuff! The man, the legend!

I have often thought that Jim has smoked so much of this blend he has turned into Edward G Robinson! I think that Edward G Robinson didn't die, he just disappeared for the Life Insurance money and to get rid of the annoying wife and reinvented himself as a comic book illustrator. If you haven't noticed there are no photographs of Jim Inks before 1973 the year that Edward G supposedly died. Very strange...... rotf

I actually like this blend very much. I first tried it a few years ago in the little 1.75 cans. I did not like it at first because both tins were dry as a bone and crumbled to dust in my fingers. I talked to Ben AKA The Artful Codger and he instructed me on how to rehydrate the tobacco. It was better but still not a keeper. A couple months ago I thought about giving it another try. The same thing happened to me with Mixture 79, I hated it in the pouch but I bought some in bulk and loved it so I bought a tub. It is in my rotation now. So, I figured maybe the Edward G. Robinson would be better in the tub, and I was right! I can't stay away from this stuff! Matter of fact, I'm getting ready to fire up a bowl in my 1960s Dr. Grabow Regal adjust a Matic bent after typing this! The room note reminds me of being over my grandparents house on holidays back in the early 1980s, most of the older adults smoked pipes and cigars and my mom and Dr smoked cigarettes. The aroma was actually pleasant!

jiminnks isn't just a proponent and fan of this blend. I believe he was a prime mover in reviving its presence on the pipe tobacco market. I don't know the details, but I don't think we'd even have this blend, except as a rare vintage item in dusty tins, if jiminks hadn't promoted it. There's a story here, but it's not my story.
