I appreciate Lakeland, but I don't care for it, much. When it sneaks into a GH blend that isn't supposed to have it, I kind of enjoy it, provided I haven't bought a pound of the stuff.

I just finished my third dose of the Hyde Park. The maple and rum may be in there somewhere, but I'm definitely dealing with some kind of floral thing, mainly.
Perhaps this blend is like one of my local eateries, where the flavor balance varies with whomever is working on a given day.
I'll likely not pursue any stronger Lakelands based on this. Even if this is "not" really a Lakeland.
Thanks for all the info.

Yes, hawky454, I do live in Austin and it was Kyle at Pipe World.
I will try to hit Pipe Club night there for the first time on 7/27.
Maybe we will meet some day.
Wow man, what a trip! I don't go in there very often but the last time I did (about a month ago) we just got to talking and then somehow the Lakeland topic came up and he basically told me the same thing. Though like I said, I had already tried Hyde Park and honestly never was too keen on it. I do think there may be some kind of batch inconsistencies because a lot of folks swear there are the signature GH&Co. florals in Hyde Park... I may honestly be immune to them by now too cause I've smoked a lot of the heavier scented Lakeland's.
I stil have never been to a pipe meet up. I've been meaning to as they have one right by my house once a month at the north location Habana House. I work until 7 so it's hard to make them on time. What a small world it is.
What time are they meeting at Pipe World on the 27th?
btw, keep an eye out at Pipe World as you can often score some Esoterica's for a good price.

I think they start at 5pm, but go until whenever.
If you can't make their hours, we should hit up a coffee house or something...

I personally enjoy some Lakelands. Ennerdale flake is my favorite. I love the almond like tatse I get from it. Hyde Park was my first and I find that it sometimes definitely has some scent added. Others I detect nothing. There are many more I want to try but the budget gets in the way. I suspect I will not like them all but I bet I will like many of them. Smoke what you like, and like what you smoke!!

I wouldn't give up on Lakeland's based on Hyde Park. I made the mistake of passing on Lakeland's because when I was just a novice I tried Bob's Chocolate Flake and the florals on there just seemed out of place at the time and they only distracted from the other flavors so after I threw out BCF I swore off Lakeland tobaccos for a long, long time until I decided to try a heavily scented Lakeland such as Ennerdale. I say go big or go home. There is a big difference between a tobacco with a little trace of florals where they almost seem out of place than on a tobacco where it was definitely intended to be heavily scented. For instance I love Kendal Flake but if I taste even the slightest bit of florals on Cabbies Mixture (and I have on one tin) then I'm gonna be pissed because that stuff doesn't not belong on that blend.

After I got acquainted with the real Lakeland's I fell in love with them and I was able to appreciate the more subtle Lakeland's with time, I think the subtle Lakeland's are the ones that hard to understand but most people make the mistake of referring a beginner to the very slightly scented baccies first.

If we end up meeting up, I will bring some heavy hitters but you are probably going to want a cob to smoke them out of at first. I now have several briars that are reserved for such blends.

Another thing about Lakeland's that most fail to mention is they all have different flavor profiles. Some have rose while others have geranium and musk and heliotrope and so on. If you decide you don't like one it doesn't necessarily mean you won't like another.

Would SG Black Forest be included?
That is where it gets tricky and I have yet to try that one but from what I know of it I would say no. Yes it is made by Samuel Gawith that make their blends in the Lake District and for some folks that qualifies as a Lakeland. But when the majority of folks mention the term Lakeland they are referring to the traditionally scented tobaccos that usually include some kind of florals like rose and geranium. Some Samuel Gawith blends that are considered Lakeland Scented tobaccos are: Grousemoor, RB Plug, Cannon Plug and some will throw Bracken Flake in the mix but I disagree with that. I'm sure there are more from Samuel Gawith but nothing else comes to mind at the moment. The majority of scented tobaccos from that region will come from it's sister company Gawith, Hoggarth & Co.
GH&Co. is the most well know company that scents their tobaccos but it's actually done by a lot of other companies and was born from the English Purity laws. There are also some old worlde tobaccos from America that have a very similar style top dressing. Two that I can think of are from LJ Peretti; Original Mixture and No Name Mixture are both heavily scented all American tobaccos (Burley blends). It was quite popular in the States at one point in time.

I actually kind of like Mix 79 too, although I wish it had a bit more nicotine but it's not near as bad as some people try to make it out to be. However, I don't really get the Lakeland reference though but I have seen people describe it as an American Lakeland too.

Thanks for the Black Forest info.

As to Mix 79, that was my thought on first try.

Pete's Hyde Park or GLP's Stonehenge would ease you into lakelands both made by Gawith Hoggarth & Co.
