I'd recommend purchasing some Sutliff Match to see if you like it first. If so you have to weigh the value of the un-opened tin and go from there. If you don't like it you can sell and buy a few new pipes!

Update to this thread, I still haven't popped this open. So much other stuff in my rotation, I thought I'd wait for a special occasion. However.....I was in my local B&M store a few weeks ago and noticed an old tobacco cutter and a unopened can of Ready Rub on the counter! This one is super old, @JimInks or other old timers, do you have any idea how old this may be? Anyway, Jerry the owner said a lady in the neighbourhood was cleaning out her basement and just dropped them off for him. (Nice old lady, leading me to wonder what the hell I'm missing out on in that basement!) Anyway, Jerry is going to invite all his pipe smokers to an event where he will pop this can open and let everyone smoke a bowl with a whiskey. I'll be posting to my Canadian friends living in the Toronto area the time and date. Can't wait to give this a try!

I'm not sure, but it's no later than the 1950s, and could be older. Can we get a close up on what's left of that stamp? And is there any writing on the other side of the tub?

Thanks Jim, I'll get more pictures and attach. As for this kind of tin, I understand that they were known for keeping tobacco stable over a very long time. Do you think we can assume that it will be smokeable after opening or will it require a few weeks with a Boveda?

Let me know what you think please. I think we will plan to open it a week in advance to ensure that it's smokable when the event happens.
1948.

You won't know if you need to do rehydration until you open it. If you hear a "whoosh" sound when you open the can, you have a good chance of it being ready to smoke. If it's dry as a bone, try a bowl anyway before you rehydrate.

Wow! Thanks for sharing this! I'm not sure what I would do, but I like the idea of buying the Sutliff match to make sure you're going to like it.

Update...we decided to err on the side of caution and open the tin a week before the event at my local B&M just in case it was sawdust and we needed to rehydrate. Just as @JimInks said, as soon the store owner, Jerry began turning the old key, we heard this whoosing sound that seemed to last a good 3 seconds or more. Following this, the shop immediately filled with the most amazing aroma! After nearly 74 years, this tobacco is absolutely perfect! It was still so moist that we had to dig it out with a screwdriver! I was lucky enough to have the first bowl and have smoke 3 since then. Hope my tin from the 60's is equally as good. For anyone wishing to try this tobacco, all you have to do is make your way to Toronto where Jerry will be happy to share a bowl! What an amazing experience!!!

I'm thrilled to hear the great news. Let me give you some more advice. Blends of this vintage can degrade from fresh oxygen in a very short time. I'd break it up into small jars as soon as possible, so whenever you want some, you won't expose it all to fresh air. I've seen vintage tobacco go flat in the past, so protect your wonderful bounty.
