A bunch of smart kids invented personal computers fifty years ago.
They didn't invent anything. The computer has been an evolution of the analytical machine first built in the 1830's, but was conceived of much earlier. They merely used already existing technologies to bring them together in a home garage to take the computer one step further in evolution. Yes, they were smart, and they beat companies that were already doing this to the punch. But, it was a far cry from "inventing." Sorry, just clarifying. puffy

We discussed and solved that problem in the dormitory lobby too.:)

All thd world’s population could live in Texas in a new suburban home. There’s a lot of land in temperate climates.

Fertile farmland is so great overproduction and obesity is a serious problem. When I was in the dorm corn was used to feed cattle, and now 40% of a corn crop many times larger is used to make alcohol to burn in our cars , that get double the mileage, plus corn has steadily replaced cane sugar in the luxury foods that increase our girth.

Here’s why.

A bunch of smart kids invented personal computers fifty years ago.

The computer geeks in the dorm lobby predicted everything about on the money except one thing.

Who would have thought we’d type instead of talk on our pocket computers?.:)

Other kids are in dorm lobbies today.

They will invent things we can’t imagine.

Increases in knowledge stretch natural resources indefinitely.
@Briar Lee is in the house!

Good to "read" you, hope you are having a great start to the New Year!

There were computers in 1976.

One of the computer nerds took me to the top floor of the library where our nerds were playing a starship enterprise battle game with MU Columbia’s computer nerds over an early version of the internet.

Their nerds were better than ours.

Our nerds predicted flat screen televisions, self driving electric cars, pocket computers, artificial intelligence, everything we in fact do have.

It was my economics professors that were dead wrong.

They predicted perpetual ten per cent inflation.

They couldn’t have foreseen Volkmer.

Those of us that daily follow the news want no part of another Volcker Recession.

The first year out of law school in 1983-4 I personally foreclosed on 52 farms—no houses—farms only.

I could have bought every one at $300 an acre but none sold, all went back to the banks.

Today not an acre of those farms would sell under eight thousand at auction.

Whatever happens, fertile farm land will all still be there in fifty more years, or a hundred.

People will always eat.:)

That sir is probably the truest statement I've ever seen on this forum! Cheers!

To be fair to our UMKC nerds, their computer console was maybe a year or two old and the UMC nerds had the latest 1976 model.

But even then, they had the University of Missouri system interconnected by modems.

The nerds at UMR (Rolla School of Mines) were the ultimate nerds, who designed the system.

Our smartphones today are ridiculously better than the best computers then.
