Welcome allan, Dunhill's will give a very good smoke over all. If you find them for the right money on the estate market, they can represent a pretty good value. It sounds like you did fine with yours. You will need to learn how to post pictures, we are picture whores here, we live for them. If I can figure out how to do it, anyone can. If you need help with that let us know.
I used to be a rep in the jewelry biz. My mfgs were Excellent Earrings, House of Bangles, Gold Heart International, Lon Scott Deigns,Zamel and some silver company I forget the name of. . I used to work the big shows in the city and visited often. I was in Boston and my territory was N.E.

Hello again
I'm trying to post pictures of my Dunhill from Ebay, the cumberland group 4 and I asked kevin to help me find which buttons to press to enter the pictures from my computer desktop. i can't find any instrutions anywhere...
My wife surprised me with a bent Dunhill amber flame (1) for the holidays, new in box from Dunhill NYC.
I was floored! (I guess she loves me after all)
My question:
The finish is beautiful and I'm guessing I could at least 2 'regular' Dunhill's for the price she paid.
Other than collectors looking at it like their stamp collections or match book collections, is there any reason at all to have an 'amber flame' pipe, other than bragging rights? After all, we are putting a match to it, and eventually knowing me I'm going to bang it somewhere.
Does it smoke any better than a 'normal' Dunhill? I'm going into the city today to return it unless I hear that this pipe will out smoke any other Dunhill that is not an amber flame.
Thanks for your suggestions

Allan

In re-reading my post, it may sound like I'm ungrateful to my wife for getting this amber flame. Nothing can be furthur from the truth; she is aware and let me know it is my choice on what to do-return or keep it.
thanks

Yep, keep it. "I like it, but I want to trade it for X" only works for women, not men. We tend to end up in the dog house for doing that. Keep it for a quick smoke on a cold day.

Welcome to the forum Allan. I enjoyed your post. I bought my first Dunhill the other day and have to say that it lives up to the hype.
A flame grain is, I believe, mainly a cosmetic benefit, but they are highly sought after nevertheless. If you really believe your wife is okay with a switch, then I'd do it. IMHO, you need to really love the pipe, otherwise it tends to just sit there.

allan, you need to set up a photobucket account for free. Once you have it, then you can download your pictures from your computer into photobucket and post them from there. Let us know when you get the account set up and we can walk you through it.
I think any group 1 pipe is way too small, I do not believe they are worth the money and certainly not an amber root. I think it is a waste honestly, and you could probably get a nice sized group 4-5 Shell that will smoke just as good for the same if not less.

Hi again everyone

Boy, this is fun!
My wife and I went today to dunhill where she got the amber flame pipe and I did forget to mention she also purchased the limited edition pipe humidor with the burl wood. Absolutely gorgeous piece of craftsmanship. What a fantastic gift! I am very hard to buy things for over the many years of marriage and finally there are things that she can get for me.
(My wife is not for sale at this moment-she is making up for all the shoes and bags she has purchase over the years :))
Anyway the salesman recognized her immediately and gave us no issue in returning the amber flame pipe.
From my research and asking questions everywhere the amber flame does seem to have more to do with cosmetics / status and bragging rights than actual smoking quality

Therefore we decided to hold off until I'm sure that

I won't fall back into cigars again as I did about 35 years ago letting the pipes sit unused. :)
When I figure out photo bucket or IE and url's I will post pics of the humidor.
Meantime I'm waiting for a delivery of a Hungarian oom pah from Italy - estate pipe from Neat Pipes

It looks gorgeous and I can't wait to get it

I'm sorry. I am having some trouble trying to post an image from my 'album' and also I double sent the last post and can't find where to delete it.
Must admit, this is a bit frustrating.

Personally I think it's another item which is about the brand. I've heard some say they love their Dunhills and I've heard many others say they're good smokers, not great.
I myself will probably never buy a Dunhill unless I can find an estate cheap enough. Having heard that they're only good smokers from some it leaves me leary about throwing so much money into one.
I'm sure British heritage plays a bit of a part in it as well. My heritage is Irish-German so I'm a sucker for a Peterson, and I'm sure there are some people with Italian heritage who gravitate towards Savinelli.
My fiance's grandmother used to say, "After the bills are paid then you buy perfume.", for us we could enter pipe in at the end, but I'm sure you get the idea. If you like it and it's within your financial means buy it.

Now, when all said and done, I only own and prefer Dunhills made prior to 1968 and of Group 4, 5, or 6 -- depending on the Dunhill's shape.
rothnh Could you elaborate a bit? I'm just being curious, and have no knowledge on Dunhills what so ever, but would love to own one :puffy:

Prior to 1968, every Dunhill pipe was the hand made creation of a single craftsman, from the curing and selection of the briar and all the materials, to the final polishing of the finished pipe. I like that whole concept and the pipes those guys made, so I stick with the pre-'68's.
Thanks rothnh - good info!
Would love to see your Dunhill collection some day [hint hint] :puffy:

I thought that the Dunhill pipe group was printed on each pipe (except for the special models); group 5 would say something like 5102; group 4 would be printed 4121 with the other numbers meaning the shape of the pipe and the stem shape.
Am I incorrect? I believe I got this initial info from Cup o Joes web site where a staff member does a video on Dunhill shapes and sizes.
They did change all of this very recently with the new pipes' numbers printed now in a oval circle.

I bought my first little Dunhill(3103) several months back and can't tell it smokes any better than the Petersens I have...or others. Frankly, I like my Ferndown and and the "Professor" about as much as I'm likely to like any pipe. It's sort of like having a Ruger and then owning a Colt. Both shoot and have their good points. It's all how you perceive them.

I'm smoking my first ever Dunhill right now. It is the 1957 Bruyere Bulldog Group 4 I posted a picture of as my birth year Dunhill a couple of days ago. She smokes excellently. I do think it is somewhat better than my Stanwell's & Savinelli's. The pipe is very light and very comfortable in the mouth. The draw is perfect! Right now I'm smoking Peterson's Nutty Cut in her and I can't say I've ever had a more pleasant smoke. I love this old Dunhill. Would I do it again? Absolutely.

By the way the pipe was expertly refurbished. Looks almost brand new.
