What would be the tells?
Ever watch an old piece of furniture be authenticated on Antiques Roadshow? It's like that. Lots of details get pointed out, but in the end it is a gestalt impression that decides it. A sense that manifests itself (you don't work toward it, it happens of its own accord) after sufficient exposure and study. I don't think Adam Davidson would have any problem separating a table of Dunhills into pre and post 1970 groups, for example, nor would Michael Lindner, Rich Esserman, John Loring (if he were still with us), and so on.

Ps. Not that it matters to anyone, but it's actually a $2800 pipe in USD.
I could most def use an easy $500 myself. I believe you give yourself too much credit and me not enough.

I don't think you understand the situation. YOUR ability level (in anything, not just pipes) has nothing to do with MINE. They are completely separate and independent.
In essence, you asked me if I could play Bach's Violin Partita No. 3, and I said yes. End of story.
Might I ask your age? Some of the things you say make me wonder what it might be.

Can't say much about the current estate market, but when I was more active it was shockingly easy to get good money for any DR that wasn't a tiny billiard. Old was better than new, but not as much of a difference as you might think. That shape would sell. But $3k is stout, and I don't like it as a ****. Never could get any extra $ for those skinny silver bands. If I had to stick to the choices offered by the OP, I guess I would go the commission route.
@georged, I love the Pete.
@Nate, I don't know anything about Parks, but that is one good looking hunk of wood!

Nate, a point of clarification: Do you think that someone could not pick out an old Dunhill from a new one based on the different pipes' smoking characteristics or based upon their aesthetic qualities? Your post seems to suggest the former, but I want to make sure I understand your challenge - and George's response.
(Sorry for the obtuse question. I'm new to pipes and new to the the forum.)

I love a Dunhill as much as anyone, but I wouldn't spend that on a pipe, Dunhill or commission. Further, why buy a new Dunhill? Estates are a much better value.
