Nate - yes, most artisan pipe don't hold their original values, save a few makers.
However, I think the future value of the new White Spot Dunhills, particularly the upper stratosphere pipes remains to be seen. Dunhill collectors prize pipes made in the early 60's and those from later periods lose their luster a little. Will that change, guess we'll find out in 30 years?

Another option:
Get a Pete for nine percent of that to assuage the gold/grain/bulldog thing, and have enough left over for 2-3 commissions.

Beautiful pipe but the price is just ridiculous. Knock the 3 off the front and you can have a GBD just as nice.
Yes I know, there's a difference between Timex and Rolex.

I've seen quite a few high end Dunhills of late go well into four figures. The newer ones actually seem to sell just as well as the old when it comes to DR's despite the legend of older Dunhills. I've watch these things quite closely these past couple years having bought/sold more than a few dozen. I DO NOT claim to be the expert, but have paid close attention. Price is far more effected by shape/condition/edition than year. This flys in the face of what I've read here on the forum, but while there are a few Dunhill fans here, most aren't fans whatsoever.
On a more personal note, of the 50-60 Dunhills that have passed through my hands, I've yet to see anything special about older Dunhills. They smoke not even a tiny bit better/different than new ones. Were we able to, I'd bet serious money that anyone could blindly pick the older Dunhill vs a brand new one in same condition.

For the sake of posterity, here's my Parks commission which included a custom tamp for the bargain basement price of just under 2k. Crazy? Depends, but generally yes, quite mad. I wouldn't buy a brand new $3k+ Dunhill, but not on principal. God bless those who do.

Artisan or even that Pete George posted plus 10 pounds of St. James Woods.
Anyone else think the rings are off on that DH? From the top down to the first ring, the left looks bigger than the right. Maybe it's the camera.

I'm guessing that is a Supreme George?
Yes. I'm guessing based on overall "look & feel" it was probably made in 80's.
btw, I took the pics right after I got it just to show a friend the grain. Since then, I removed the obscene amount of impacted carnauba from the rings (which is why they look strangely shiny-glisteny), and re-worked the stem some. (Pete bite zone thickness, button detail, and overall stem bend are usually left at about 85% of what they could be).
The pipe smokes REALLY well. Hangs great, tastes great, and stays cool. 8)
As much as I categorically love Dunhills, prime-specimen Petes are tough to beat (when you can tweak their stems yourself, anyway).

@nate @ssjones Dunhills certainly have a higher resale point. They've been around a long time even for non-smokers to know what Dunhill is. Honestly I dont believe the specimen above should deserve the 4 Stars, the grain is lacking seriously for the grade. Maybe a DR single star?
@nate Love your banker shape, I will be on Parks' commission list next year. This year has been too crazy to do anything else. I still snuck in an 80 year old Dunhill pot though ;)
@Georged Peterson Supremes are really nice, but I've read they have internal grades even for Supremes and the highest ones usually sells for around $800+ ? BTW that spigot dog is awesome for a $300-$400 pipe.

Didn't want to seem lazy, so took some pics to show the cleanup/tuneup I described a couple posts back.
Also one of the shape number. Looks like "80S", if that means anything. (I'm not a collector of Petes, just an "accumulator/smoker" of them, so don't pay much attention to their stamping & etc.)
NOTE: the picture host I'm using these days since Imgur went to shit renders things a lot darker & duller than Imgur did. No worries---the pipe in hand still looks like it did in the earlier set... bright gold, and sparkly. I didn't re-stain it, or anything like that.

This 1923 DR is far more appealing to my eye, and it can be had for probably less than $1,000 (which makes me think that an estate White Spot would be worth even less).

This amazing piece [a jumbo Bing] only went $1,250.
That's one of the coolest pipes Dunhill ever made, imo. If I could afford extravagant things it would be mine! Mine, I say!

And I've seen recent ones go for far more. You honestly believe you could pick an old Dunhill from a new one, all other things being equal? Current DR's break $1000 all the time. The old ones are cool and I love them, but they smoke no differently from a new one.
Oh and the one the OP posted is a new one. New, like cars, is where the hit is taken.
