I saw that earlier today when I googled it also, but I’m not sure how that works into the discussion. If GM bought Porsche, they’d still be Porsche cars.
It doesn't really have a bearing on this discussion, but to Porsche enthusiasts, they wouldn't consider them to still be Porsche cars (see what happpened to Saab when GM bought them...)

I understand the standard shape bowls are turned by Barontini in Italy and finished in England. Collectors and other unique shapes are carved start to finish in England.
So I went back to the shop to clarify this situation and the sales lady basically said the same but without mentioning any names. The owner/pipe maker/tobacconist never seems to be there but I will hunt him down until I get a straight answer. This will grow my cellar a bit as I feel obligated to buy something everytime I go there. ?

Basically every briar pipe has some manufacturing process done it Italy, see Romeo Domenico, doesn't mean they are made there. As soon as I corner this guy and get an answer I will post it here.

That’s amazing.
Probably one the most interesting stories about pipe making. I had no idea until I watched it. I love the part where he talks about how many people are involved for every single pipe made and the energy or "soul" of every pipe.
I also wince every pass he makes on that open saw. Lol
Once travel restrictions open up I plan to go pay him a visit during the summer months. I love that part of Italy.

Ok I watched the film.
But really ? Every pipe has some manufacturing process done in Italy ?
And what has he got to do with Dunhill ? I don't get it. I don't see your point.

Could you please elucidate on exactly what you mean.

My point is that briar does not come from England. Therefore some manufacturing was done before the briar was shipped to England or elsewhere. I did not mean to imply that ALL briar is manufactured or cut in Italy but I have heard that most of it is. As the film states, many people, and processes, are involved before a pipe maker even gets the raw material to make pipes. Maybe, this is what the sales lady was referring to when she said that Dunhill was made in Italy but I don't know what she meant.
Hope that helps.

Sorry to continue the derail but I do believe it is a valid analogue. Honestly many Porsche enthusiasts believe that there hasn't been a real Porsche produced since they stopped making them air cooled in, I believe, 1998. Similarly, many Dunhill collectors will say that while the modern iteration is not a proper Dunhill, they haven't been "real" Dunhill pipes since some time in the early 1970s.

It still blows my mind that a distributor or retailer would tell a customer something that might kill the sale. I mean, is it like someone asked, “is absolutely everything about this pipe made in England?” And the retailer was stricken with a need to reveal everything to spare his conscience? WTF
I'm often amazed at how willing sales staff are to reveal all they know about an item, whether it be a pipe or whatever.
I guess they just want to show that they are up to scratch.
I appreciate it actually, and if I like the item, I'll buy it anyway. regardless of the provenance.

She probably didn't think it was a sale killer. How many time have you said to yourself, "Oh, I'll buy that! It's made in England!" for anything that wasn't pipe related?

Absolutely! In the pipe world we have this notion of one man going out and selecting the briar, making the stummel, and finishing the pipe.
In the car world, transmissions, starters, and sometimes even engines are farmed out to other makers, but yet we still go by the logo on the car. I mean, when you buy a Mercedes, chances are that it’s made here in Alabama by a bunch of us rednecks, ha ha. But, many still see it as a German car.
