Congrats on making thar very tough decision. I think most if us can relate to the challenge of money/value on a dunhill or any other high end pipe
I know I have

UPDATE:
Just got off an e-mail exchange with Chris Askwith and have commissioned 2 Mortas!!
1. For me, a classic straight Bulldog with a 'Celtic' woven silver ferrule.

2. For my son, a larger straight Dublin with a wide latticed silver ferrule. His will come in a posh presentation box like peckinpahhomme's! If that doesn't get him into pipe smoking I'll demand it back! lol
I should still have some money left over from what I would have paid for the 'DR' to buy a dozen clay pipes in order to test my theory that Mortas are not entirely neutral! LOL

@roth, it is advertised as 10,000 year-old 'bogwood'. I am sure it is carbon-dated, but I will ask him all your questions when he replies to my last e-mail which I sent 30 mins ago.

I like the idea of getting the really nice presentation box for your son, on the off-chance that he will not take up pipe smoking!!!
Think I might order my son one for Christmas as well, then I can tell my OH he didn't want it :)

Phase one of the 'DR substitute' - a Chris Askwith Morta, arrived a couple of days ago. A dear friend said he would post the pics. Hope they appear below!! LOL
Still to come, my son's Morta, and still plenty of change for a LOT of tobacco!!
PS this was NOT the DR under discussion!!!! LOL

:D

Have a smoke yet?
A lovely pipe indeed!
You made the right decision!
I need to get me a morta!
Now that I actually like Latakia, I'd be interested to hear opinions about how morta accentuates or carries the flavors, as I've read that they help make Latakias sing...

@mlc, she smokes like a dream, IMO especially with Latakia mixtures/ Balkan Flakes. Did a direct comparison with clay pipes today. Will do a full report tomorrow. Too pissed now (one and a half bottles of wine!). But IMHO everyone should have at least one Morta in their collection - that one was £215 and a value for what it is !!!!

@roth, yep, I asked for a 'Celtic' silver band to 'set it off'
@bentmike, thanks - technically a 'Rhodesian' but who the fuck cares? not me !!

Sorry I didn't see the callout for the pics. Anyway, glad mlc came up trumps. Beautiful pipe again from Chris. I love the shape, and would like to add one to my collection, but I've never had much luck smoking conical bowls. I just don't seem to get on with Dublin bowls etc. But this is a classic shape.
Not the old Bulldog vs Rhodesian argument again! I actually favour the opinion of a YouTube colleague who described the shapes from an old Dunhill shape chart. This one would have been called a bulldog. It has nothing to do with the round vs diamond shank, but had actually to do with the elevation of the top part of the bowl above the rings. The taller profile bowls were called bulldogs and the lower/wider profile bowls were called Rhodesians regardless of stem shape. This is not to open a can of worms, just to state how Dunhill originally called them in their early catalogues, and what I use to distinguish them.

Happy to give way to erudition, at any time!! lol So, she's my 'Black Bitch Bulldog' !!! LOL
PS Don't want to rain on your parades, but Chris who carved it called it a "Rhodesian"!! However, as of now, I will think of it as 'My Rhodesian Black Bitch Bulldog'

You can excuse Chris, he knows nought of the old ways :) After a long protracted and heated discussion on this topic on FB we all agreed to call them Bull Terriers
