Earlier this year, at the JB Hayes shop in Northern VA, John Hayes showed me this unsmoked James Upshall E grade. I think that this pipe is equal to or better grained then the 2 Star. He was asking $800 for it.

flakey, for my money no one is making a better pipe than Rad Davis. In terms of smoking properties, I have not found anyone who makes a better pipe and I have smoked plenty from the likes of Rainer Barbi, Former, Kurt Balleby, Castello, Dunhill, Upshall, Ferndown, Ashton, Charatan and plenty of others.
Check out his gallery and see if something catches your eye, he will make anything for you, requires no deposit and is a pleasure to do business with.

flakyjakey,

Bide your time brother, you'll either find a pipe by one of the many makers that speaks to you or from one of the fine maker's building privately today who you can commission exactly what you want. You could also keep looking for DR's and find one like mine which cost me under $1000 US which I considered a steal given what I have seen lesser looking ones go for. After all this talk I ended up smoking some fine 2001 Luxury Bullseye Flake in my DR R and enjoyed it greatly. Warmest regards.

flaky, with the bonus from your job, I think an arbitrarily expensive pipe that you have obsessed on

is just about the right way to reward yourself. If it still speaks to you, go for it, or if not, find one that

does. Perfect way to acknowledge that you are doing all right for yourself. Amen.

Interesting comments abound. As for the "alternatives," the boy wants a Dunhill, which bit of that do you not understand? And if your head explodes in anger around that particular issue, then tough.
Well.....

First: for one the fact that flakey looked over his other brand straight grained pipes for comparison and the Dunhill fell short .......

Second:
I don't like the idea that I might be paying such a high premium simply for the name, simply to 'tick the DR box' LOL
To me that says "looking for alternatives".

When I read this from flakey I thought he was looking for alternatives.

I may end up tossing those coins lol unless fishnbanjo comes back in and helps me with my Chris Askwith Mortas alternative, please???
There are always alternatives to every pipe, Dunhill included. I think flakey is unsure of spending that kind of money on one pipe when the alternative could be 3-4 pipes from some great artisans instead. I think people were just trying to be helpful is all.

@cigrmaster, you are correct. I took note of all the advice, and very helpful it was too. I'm just making a cup of tea and will then post the final installment of my saga!

Okay, this is my final (I hope!lol) post on this topic. Basically I had made up my mind to 'go for it' (until I met reborn yesterday - see below)
But it was still complicated! The DR auction in question was by 'Bruyere Pipes' in Germany, but I didn't want to spend more than 800 UK pounds on it. The reason for this is that 'her indoors' (she must love me! LOL) bought me a 'special pipe' for my 60th Birthday. It is a 1914 Barling, with beautiful silverwork and of historical and personal significance, which cost £800 and I would have felt bad spending more on a DR.
As well as the auction pipe, Bruyere pipes had another DR** 'purchase now' of c. £900 and which was coming close to the 'times up'. So my cunning plan was to hope the latter didn't sell and bid £800 for the one under auction. If I lost that auction I would then have offered £800 for the other DR when it was re-listed. Are you following me, so far?? LOL
The 'purchase now' DR did not sell and was re-listed at the same price 'purchase now or offer'. So far, so good!! When reborn and I got back to the house and into the port lol, it was four hours to the end of the auction (why do the Germans finish their auctions at 04.00 UK time??). We discussed my plan. Reborn was not impressed; he said he thought the grain on a Dunhill HT straightgrain Collector that I had bought from him for £400 a while back was superior. In fact I then remembered him saying at the time that it had the "best grain he had ever seen on a Dunhill". So we got it out - it was! LOL, and so was that on my G-grade James Upshall pot AND my Peterson's Straightgrain Sitter.
So I held back and went to bed with an easy mind. Would I get a DR? Yes, BUT it would have to look as good as fishnbanjo's stunning example!! LOL
Today, I made the decision that I am going to spend my 'bonus' money on TWO Mortas commissioned from Chris Askwith - one for me and the other as a graduation present for my son, even though he has been spoiled quite enough this weekend!! LOL (I should still have some cash left over for some VERY special tobacco!!) End of story.

A fitting ending like no other, may I be the first to offer you, and your son, many, many fine years of smoking a quality pipe by a quality gentleman pipe maker!

Sounds like a good plan. You certainly did your due diligence and I am sure someday a DR will come around that will be worthy. Make sure you post some pics of the Morta's when they are done.

Thanks for the update flakey. Always nice when we make a decision (one way or the other) and feel confident in it. Good luck with those mortas!

I would definitely go down the Chris Askwith route this time - but I would make a proposal. Why not get Chris to do the Morta for your son and get him to make you a straight grain briar? This way, not only will you get a nice straight grain piece, but you can also decide on the shape you want made. Best of both worlds.
