Jesse : thank you for the kind words and help.

I know about the thin line between what blesses and what aches us, I was born a pathological perfectionist.

Suppose it is in the genes.
George : English is not my first language. Sorry to trouble you, but could you explain once again ? I always want to learn.
There are plenty in my rotation to smoke and I am very finnicky about my pipes, so it will be returned to the seller for a full refund. I trust the guy was not aware, he resold the pipe for an acquaintance.

Hi Mike, I'm in the Netherlands.
Yes, this the most kind and helpful community ever.
I meanwhile refurbished so many pipes and I like to think that I deliver a decent performance :) So I still do not understand how I could oversee such a major flaw.

Well, the number of non-finicky folks here you can count on one hand. Thank heavens we're not all finicky about the exact same things!
major flaw.

but that is all personal though. As Jesse said above, the pipe could deliver great smokes and be functional in every way.
Yes, you have a nice choice- keep it and smoke it in good health, or return it with regret. (Guessing here)

The black kinked line shouldn't have (quite) such a sharp bend. Jesse posted a good comparison photo earlier in the thread.
The arrows show where the top line of the stem wavers in profile. It should be very nearly perfectly straight. Not only are the discrepancies themselves damning, but their LOCATION is especially suspicious. The low and high spots are typical of inexperienced stem makers for technical reasons.

George :
Thank you for the comprehensive explanation . This is amazing; it takes a very experienced eye to notice.
The picture is a little blurry; even when holding the pipe in hand it is hardly detectable, but I can FEEL the wavering on the stem with my index fingertip.
Meaning the stem is overpolished, or a poorly made replacement ?

I used the technical term "wonky fitment" to describe this.....

It also looks like either the stem isn't inserted all the way, or its just a sloppy fit. (appears to be a gap)

Al- Those photos are so soft, as well as under-pixilated, that I don't think one can draw a from conclusion re the stem fit. -OP- how is it??
And I don't recall seeing such a grunged out mortise as this!

Earlier, I said:

The stem pics don't show enough to make a determination, but based on what can be sort-of seen, it definitely looks suspect.
The overlaid line and arrows in a later pic then pointed out what I meant by "sort-of seen"
If the pic of the stem on the bag is the same pipe, the inner tube would give some weight to the stem being original (they were drilled differently, and the tube wouldn't fit most replacements.)
The tenon face / tenon junction can't be seen, but it doesn't matter. In the early 80's the transition was a rounded radius, not a 45-degree angle.
Given the new pic & info, my current best guess is the sharp shank/stem transition and wavering top line are the result of someone doing a bad job of oxidation removal via sanding on an original stem.

This is my notion too; the tenon face/-junction looks to be from the early 80's.

Al : the fit is btw very decent, so no gap at all.

The chamber is in fine condition and there is no smell whatsoever. jmpcwr: the mortise is not that dirty, I've cleaned up much worse.

So most likely an original, overpolished stem. Will return the pipe anyway.

Thank you all, your help is greatly appreciated.

Always such a pleasure to study George's tutorings, never a dull moment :)
