I haven't watched it yet, but I see the new Dune is 83% certified fresh with a 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Which I find exciting, because I now get to watch it to find out if you all actually know what you're talking about, or are just a bunch of grumpy old men. ?
Hmmm. Well, I suppose the old adage of "nothing sells like experience, is just a bunch of white privileged hate talk by older angry white men. Seriously, just having fun... It's what we use to call a joke before we knew how offensive we were being, LOL.

Well, the old and true Hollywood has been dead since the late 60's. The amalgamation has become so formulaic that no genuine art can prevail. Just look at how many superhero and subsequent character origin story spin-offs they can make. Those damned things are all the same. EVERY. F'ING. ONE. Sadly, they make movies for today's movie-going demographic which has changed over the years and apparently only prefer the same vanilla flavor over and over again. Luckily, there are still independent artists working against the giant machine and many of them are successful at creating genuine art.

Herbert, who happens to be from the town I live in, created a fascinating world and its good he's not around to see it destroyed.

Totally agree about Paris Texas!
Plus Ry Cooder did the soundtrack so it sounds great too.
That movie is so great. It doesn't feel like a long movie. And the casting was perfect. Though the fact is the geography was wrong from what I understand. Side note it was allegedly Kurt Cobains favorite movie and it's a movie worthy of such a spot. Also his favorite book is amazing and way better then the movie. Perfume.

What I love about Hollywood - We bought the rights to a story and we are going to make a movie about the story. Only, we aren't going to tell the story we bought, but rather, we are going to tell a different story, one that captures the essence of the story for which we bought the rights - because like, hey, why tell the same story twice?

Enjoy. You have more lifespan to waste than I do.
The ratings prove that H L Mencken was right.
Which admonition was he right about:

“If, after I depart this vale, you ever remember me and have thought to please my ghost, forgive some sinner and wink your eye at some homely girl.”

“Nobody ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public.”

“On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.”

I kinda think he hit the last one on the head on more than one occasion. ?

I have no dog in the hunt, nor any references or allegiance to the book(s?), author or 1980's movie (other than I think it was panned, and Sting was in it). I enjoyed the movieand desert scenes. I rarely can endure a movie longer than two hours, but didn't have an issue watching this movie (I also thought the 2nd Blade runner was pretty decent).

Couple of questions
- why does the big fat guy (Emperor) float?
- why doesn't anyone have guns, and fight with only swords and knives, when there is seemingly an umlimited array of technology?

PS: If you want to see a great movie - watch "Old Henry".

The 2000 television mini series was the best adaptation.

I don't think I've ever heard of that one...may have to check it out. I'm generally a Lynch fan but didn't like his version, and this new one sounds even worse.

Which admonition was he right about:

I'm partial to these two:

"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary."

"The urge to save humanity is almost always a false front for the urge to rule."
