To me smoking a tobacco without enjoying the tin note first is like drinking a wine without enjoying the bouquet first.

With wine, they call that the "nose" of the wine. I think it is a pleasure not to be overlooked.
Indeed on the 20-pt wine scoring system, colour is given points out of 3, the nose/bouquet 7 points and palate 10 points.

I recall many years ago being so entranced by the nose of a wine (an 15yo 1967 Ch d'Yquem) that I was still "nosing" my glass when most had already emptied their glasses.

For me, the tin note is just an aspect of the whole pipesmoking experience. It's important for me... but maybe not someone else.
Yup. Different strokes..........

We have 5 senses. When we look at food, our eyes see the presentation first. Our olfactory sense pick up on the smell. Then our taste bud detect the flavor of the food we are eating. There are some indication, without the ability to smell, the taste we can get will not be same or complete. Some argue, without the smell we won't taste anything. Tin note can be different from actually smoking experience, but it can give indication of what's to come. Of course, there are blends that smell like horse shit, but will be heavenly when smoked.
