I love the tin note of Presbyterian. I also love the experience (smell-taste-ish) of it on the retrohale. However, when smoking it, I find it to be entirely too subtle on the palate. Just don’t taste it much. I’m actually smoking through a tin of it right now. In fact, literally just finished a bowl. Even though I find it somewhat lacking in flavor, I still find it a satisfying smoke.

I'd be inclined to do the same, but then I think of cheeses that I love that smell nauseating. I bought some aged Provolone the other day. Driving home, I was alarmed by the scent that told me that someone had vomited in my car. "WTF!!!" I thought....then realized it was the cheese. The cheese was really good, and didn't smell nearly so bad once I associated it with a roast pork sandwich. Sense of smell is a weird and wonderful thing.

Sometimes I walk by my tobacco cabinet and crack open a jar just to whiff that wonderful tobacco smell.
I remember walking through the (now closed) JR Statesville, NC store, back in the day, and the wonderful aromas that emanated from the pipe tobacco room. "I really have to give pipe smoking a try" I would think, but didn't, until maybe ten years later.

I've watched quite a few youtube pipe tobacco reviews and most of them dwell on tin note. Why? It is no indication of whether the tobacco is good for smoking. If it doesn't taste good when smoked, then who cares whether tin note is any good?

Good example: Planta Presbyterian tin note is one of the most vile stenches I've encountered, yet the smoke is very different and I enjoy it very much.
Tin note is part of the enjoyment. Part of what people might really care about or not really care about. Also the more experience you have the more the tin note tells you about what you're going to experience when you smoke it and yeah it's one of those things you pick up through experience. And sometimes it can also give you more of a hint about what other people are going to think of the smell when they're around you which can be super important. Even if you aren't someone who cares about other people having an o.k. time, room note can be the difference between being allowed to smoke in someones house or not. It can make a huge difference with a spouse or girlfriend/boyfriend/not quite sure what they are but they're nice to me so I don't care....

To me, the tin note is just an extra aspect to a wonderful smoking experience. I don't expect the taste to be like the smell. It's like popcorn. When you go to the movies the smell of popcorn is so good that you have to have some, but it never tastes as good as it smells. I still enjoy the popcorn and I surely enjoy the smell. The tin note is just the beginning of the process of creating what hopefully will be a satisfying smoking experience.

With one or two exceptions, I've never smoked a tobacco that tasted like its tin note. However, I love the smell of fresh tobacco, and it's a pleasure of it's own.

To me smoking a tobacco without enjoying the tin note first is like drinking a wine without enjoying the bouquet first.

Popping a well aged tin and getting that first concentrated blast of fermentation and leaf is something you can’t find anyplace else. Some blends actually cause me to salivate in anticipation. The tin note is not to be underestimated.
